Letter from debt collectors regarding previous tenant. Should I get contact them?
I received a letter from a debt collection agency. It says they are investigating an unpaid utility bill left by the previous tenant. They say they would be "grateful" if I could provide them with MY name, the lands name, the date I moved ... Since I don't even use the same electricity company, I can easily prove I have nothing to do with the bill. The previous tenant received a few letters of what looked like bills. I have sent them back to the sender with the mention"Not at address". Do i need to give the debt collection agency the information they ask me. I am a bit concerned to give my name for a bill i have nothing to do about.
ps: The letter I have received has no name on it , just " To the current occupier /landlord".
The weird thing is that they know the person has moved out then why do they need my name?

NO NO NO ... if you MUST return it, DO NOT give your name ..
Only state "Mr. XYZ moved away on (date), the Agency was (so & so), their new address is (whatever / unknown)" - plus "Please feel free to purchase further assistance from me which will be billed at my usual rate of £100 per hour or part there-of".
DO NOT TRUST the debt collectors staff (or computers) == they may well be trying to locate a previous owner / tenant, HOWEVER there is NOTHING to stop some moron employee from entering YOUR name as the person who has 'agreed' to repay the debt ...

No the collector is just blowing smoke. A landlord can't even enter a tenants home without the tenants permission. The next time the collector calls let them know that the person they are looking for no longer lives there. Tell them to not contact you again and if they do you will press charges for harassment. Tell them the call is being recorded for your protection. Even if it isn't they don't know that and should be more respectful out of fear. I don't really understand what you mean by "post for a previous tenent" but if the past tenant has left something that is repossessable then your son should just turn it back over to them. The only way they could enter his home would be throught the courts with a search warrant. And if this collector continues to harrass your son he needs to report them to the Attorney General of your state as well as the Better Business Bureau.

To be honest.... I would not give my personal information to a debt collection agency, especially not if I had nothing to do with this debt. For what reason would they need to know when you moved in, etc.? (about the only thing I can think off... is so they could nail you with this... since electric companies often have the habit to turn off the power long after the tenant is gone. That means yes, the other tenants electric co. could still have this account showing active while you already get power from another company...)
Forward the letter to your landlord... and let the landlord deal with it. Only the landlord has information that could help the Debt Collection Agency. You moved in AFTER this tenant left and should not even know that persons name... (but the landlord does.. and it is addressed to the landlord).

As has been said already, they are trying to ascertain when you moved in, so they know when the previous tenant owes money until. They may want to see a tenancy agreement, to prove that you are a genuine new tenant, not just the same person using a different name.
If you don't help, they will just pester you until you do :(

If you wanted to get them off your back a little. next letter you get from them for him -do a return to sender with a not at this address since....... This gives them that detail.

if you can give their new address or return the bill with the notation: moved address unknown.

They don't _need_ your name, and they cannot do anything with it. They are just trying to confirm that you are not telling them porkies about who you are.

You are under no obligation to tell them anything at all. I wouldn't, if I were you.
