how long after sex should I wait to take a pregnancy test?

So last night it happened(I'll spare details) but I know tomorrow is to early I also know they say before your period but mines isn't until about 2 weeks! So there has to be something I can do before that. So any women have any ideas or anything.

20 days after sex or if your period is absent. This is the most accurate.

You conceive the day of sex or up to 5 days later, implantation takes 5-12 days after conceiving, then it takes 48-72 hours for the hormone to build up to a detectable level.

A pregnancy test is useless if implantation has not yet been completed as there will be no hormones to detect.

Tests are available that you can test up to 5 days before your period, but they are usually inaccurate unless it states positive. If you do not conceive on the day of sex, implant within 5 days then this test will give a false negative as you have not allowed the natural process to occur.

It's a horrid 2 week wait, but we all go through it :)

Some tests, like First Response Early Results pregnancy tests, say they can detect the pregnancy hormone up to 6 days before your missed period, which would be about 8 or so days after you had sex if you had sex around ovulation and you ovulated around the time most women ovulate (about 14 days before your expected period). I wouldn't test until at least the day of your missed period though because before then, there is a much higher chance of getting a false negative due to the pregnancy hormone level (HCG level) not being high enough for the test to detect yet. I honestly didn't test until four days after I missed my period to make sure the results were clear. It was definitely clear! My test was a very obvious positive and there was no dealing with extremely faint lines that kind of look like a positive but might be your eyes playing tricks on you. Seriously, try and wait until the day you miss your period. I know waiting sucks but so does wasting money and the good HPTs cost around $15 to $20 for a pack of two so your money can easily go down the drain if you start testing too early. Plus, if you haven't even missed a period yet, I think it is kind of dumb to test. You may get your period right on time like always and you could have saved yourself the money by waiting just a few extra days to test. Always make sure to use your first morning urine when you test! Good luck!

You will have to wait until a few days before you would normal have your period at the soonest... and if it is negative and you don't have your period test again (all tests have instructions on the best time of day and timing to take a home test)... if you still don't have your period after a week test again and/or get to a doctor to check for pregnancy (you can go to a health clinic as well)... good luck and please use protection... it is no guarantee but it is so much better than the alternatives... undesired pregnancy, STD, etc.

I got a positive at 9 days past ovulation....on accident. I was irregular and thought I was 14 dpo. There's nothing you can do but wait at least 10 days, but you're not guaranteed an accurate result that soon. It's called the 2-week-wait for a reason.....it's like a prison sentence.

You won't get an accurate result until your period is due...

The best thing to do is wait to see if your period comes or not... You can try an early response test (the ones that say they're accurate 5 days before your missed period, etc, etc.) but it may or may not be accurate.... You can get a fully accurate result the day your period is expected.

Until then you just have to wait.

    So starts the dreaded 2ww.

You can try testing at 10dpo, but your chances of an accurate result are higher if you wait tell the day of your period.

You won't get an accurate test if you test any day before your period. Take a test the day after your period is late. Any day before that the test will be less than 50% accurate

I am waiting for more answers before I share my opinion

  • Unless you ovulated or will ovulate within 72 hours, don't test. Otherwise, wait until you're at least 9-10 days past ovulation.
