Do cars shut down with low oil pressure? 86 buick century 3.8?

A friend of mine is having a problem with her car..she has NOT changed her oil in over a year.. the oil light came on, she put more oil in the car, drove it home and now it wont start.. is there a safety feature that will shut the motor down because of low pressure...

Update:

I agree... Shes a young mother of two , single, her first car.. so when it wouldnt start I send my hubby over there.. also .. heres the kicker.. she just had the timing redone ,and they didnt even tell her to change her oil or even do it??

Update 2:

Why do people have to be soooooooo freaking stupid when it comes to cars. Oil has to be changed every 3,000 miles or 3 months whichever comes first (4-5000 miles perhaps if using full synthetic). The car won't start most likely because the motor could be locked up.

"Low Oil Shut-Down, Not in Cars over 20 Years Old". If it was making a Lot of Noise and now won't Start it's possible the Engine is Frozen. In older cars any thing over 4 months between oil changes is asking for trouble.

Very unlikely that low oil level caused the engine to shut down. Did the "low oil level" light came on or did the "low pressure" light came on? If something had caused her car to loose oil pressure such as plugged up oil filter or some other blockages in the oil gallery, adding oil will not help. Did she notice any engine overheating which usually follows loss of oil pressure? If the engine did not overheat, then we can rule out rod or main bearing freeze. BTW, not changing oil in over a year, the pan must be half full of crud blocking the oil intake.

Not on that car there isn't. Is the car still full of oil? Check that first then bring more details about what it does.

    Happy to help.
