Is the Mercedes R class a quality built car?

I'm looking at buying a used R class Mercedes - probably 2008, 2009 with low miles (<40k). I was wondering if there are any inherent problems with this model of car. I did a search and there were some electrical problems - mostly on 2007 models. I know Mercedes builds good cars, but I want to know if this particular model is free of serious problems. Thanks.

The R-Class is built on a modified ML platform and is also built at the same plant in Alabama so the pros and cons of the R-Class are similar to the ML, a much more popular vehicle. Just do a search on the '08 and '09 ML and most of the comments will apply to the R-Class as well

What's nice about the R-Class is the amount of interior space. If you have a lot of passengers, the seating room in the R is very generous. But the fuel economy of the R-Class (at least with the gasoline version) is horrible. I would strongly recommend looking for a diesel version. The diesel performs nearly as well and you would be surprised just how quiet the diesel is.

Over all Mercedes Benz has been knowmto be more of the reliable German luxury car over its rivals with infamous problems like BMW and Audi however the quality of refinement and design is very good in all three. The Mercedes R-class isnt such a popular car in the Mercedes range but its new outgoing 2011 R-class model has been getting a bunch of attention. The R-class in essence is an over priced Mini-van but you never get a Mini-Van with the luxury appeal and features as those found in an R-class. Over all the car has been successful despite it low sales compared to its brothers and sister in the range, however it hasbeen strong enough to compete and remain in this market. Although the R-Class isn't quite as roomy as a minivan and only features six standard seats (a seventh seat is optional), it is essentially a luxury family hauler for those who would never consider owning a traditional minivan. Styling is another area where the R-class seems to come up short, at least in the realm of luxury vehicles. Over all the car is reliable, and it delivers. Some minor if not real issues that previous or current R-class owners have complained about are that the Panorama sunroof has had to be repaired due to noises and slow opening, reports of the Navi system freezing up or shutting down completley on a R-class are not to common but have occured in several vehicles in the past. Another issue has been reported a couple to times are complains that the steering system would made unusual noises at extremes of turning radius.

I actually really like it! I test drove it when I had my daughter, because I love the fact that it has 6 captain's chairs, instead of bench seats in the back. You can even get seat heaters in all 6 seats. I know it looks (and drives) like a minivan, but it can look pretty cool with tint and wheels. I ended up going with a BMW, but still love the R!

Mercedes R Class is seldom seen in the U.S.A. It might be possible if somebody imported one from Germany and had the ability to convert all the U.S. Emission Control features into the bi-annual smog test effort mandated by the CA Bureau of Automotive Repair in Sacramento. Otherwise, it would not be possible to register the car in CALIF.

Just a thought. Check out a brand new Ford Flex limited. It is really luxurious for a domestic car and good value.
