My Girlfriends Hyandai Elantra 2004 has developed a coolant leak. However the check engine light isn't coming?

on and the car isn't overheating. What could be the cause of this?

    the check engine light is triggered by the cpu. the co0mputer looks for opens and shorts in electrical systems and then looks at the information that is coming back from sensors, to see if that info makes sense. the water pump is not a monitored system. a coolant leak will allow for elevated temperatures once the coolant level has dropped to a point.

    Perhaps not enough coolant has leaked out yet to cause a problem.

    Tell her to keep driving it until it blows up.

    Or get the leak fixed before hand.

    No car that I know of would use the CEL light to indicate low coolant.

    If it is leaking it needs to be fixed, simple as that...
