Can I grow hibiscus flowers that can then be used in tea here in the UK?

I love Hibiscus flowers and really want to start growing my own. I know there are hardy Hibiscus flowers that will grow in the UK, but can I use them for hibiscus tea?

Hibiscus tea is the infusion made from the calyces (sepals) of the Hibiscus sabdariffa flower, an herbal tea drink consumed both hot and cold by people around the world. It is also referred to as roselle (another common name for the hibiscus flower), flor de Jamaica in Latin America, karkadé in Egypt and Sudan, bissap in West Africa, sorrel in Jamaica, and red sorrel in the wider Caribbean.

I think it probably needs a hot climate to grow well.. But if you can find the seed, try it?

I would look for a packet of hibiscus tea in the shops, and read the ingredients. They may give the Latin name of the variety they use. You can then check this against the Latin name of the variety you want to grow. If it doesn't say on the packet I would be very cheeky and write to the manufacturerers and ask them - on the grounds that if you don't ask you'll not be told and if you do, you might be!

I dont see why you cant use any hibiscus flowers, but watch what you spray/feed with.

You can grow the very pretty ones you see abroad, if a good summer they will grow outside, but need to come inside for the winter, keep on window sill in as much light as you can ( Natural light ) and they can keep flowering for you though not as many as in summer.

WOW!! How unique! I have never heard of this before, but it looks so elegant! Also, very inexpensive! I know as a guest I would love it and would be talking about it for quite awhile!

You can do but make sure you dont use manmade fertilser to feed them as it makes the taste sour
