Do we know and follow this hadith? And if not then Why? are we too pious to follow?

“Anas bin Malik (radi Allahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) would breathe three times in the vessel and say: ‘It is more wholesome and thirst quenching.’” [The Chapter on Drinks: Jami At-Tirmidhi]

Breathing three times while drinking means that he would not gulp all the water down in one go but take breaks to breathe. These breaths would be released and drawn outside the glass. This style of drinking distinguishes man from animals as the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) told us not to drink all at once like a camel.

“Breathe three times in the vessel” means that while drinking from the vessel he used to draw his mouth away from the vessel three times and breathe outside. There is a Sahih hadith that the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) forbade breathing in the vessel. The reason being that, by doing so, the foul smell of the mouth penetrates into the water or else, more often than not, the saliva finds its way into the water, which even the drinker himself would detest. Breathing outside the glass or cup, on the contrary, is more satisfying, healthy and pleasant for the stomach.

Update:

Salma Hayek- You are right that Prophet (PBUH) was very clean, but he has to set an example for the ummah, for example, we all know that he was pure from sinns, but still he had said that he asked for forgiveness at least 70 times a day. And the smelling breath and saliva part is not about rushing when drinking, it is about breathing in the glass where you are drinking from. Maybe you haven't read it with clear understanding. There are two hadiths, one is about drinking in three sips and taking breathing inbetween and the other is about not breathing in the glass.

The reason you gave is not right to my understanding.

What he meant was that nothing should be rushed. Even drinking of water so one should sip the water and not gobble it down the throat as this might cause the water to go in the nasal passage and cause coughing and choking. Also, if one drinks water in that manner he will be ingesting unnecessary oxygen which might cause gas and bloating in the stomach. It is scientific.

It has nothing to do with bad breath and saliva. I am wondering if you are quoting one of the famous unintelligent Mullahs.

The Prophet's mouth was far from foul smell as he use to brush his teeth very regularly and taking extra precaution to ensure that his breath is always pleasing. That is why he prohibited anyone from eating raw onions before entering the Mosque.

Islam sure has ways of counteracting misstatements with truth and logic.

@Asker: The prophet asked for forgiveness not because he sinned but because he was humble and made minor misjudgments and small infractions at some time in his life so through humility (and being a man) he used to ask Allah for forgiveness. Also he had to set and example for humans to follow.....so he prayed for forgiveness.

The hadith you referred to are the same however different versions are recorded - one version expanded on it thus the breathing in the drinking vessel was recorded. If one drinks continuously, he would have to breathe and the breath would have escaped from his nose into the vessel.

But what about the people whose breath doesn't stink?

You know the ones who wash their teeth and use a breath freshener.
