If you put your profile as private (no one can see you at all) YA punishes you by taking your avatar away.
It means no one can see my profile, my name, how old I am or where I live. Go to your profile, you will find that all your personal info is public unless you edit it. Yahoo made this change without your permission.
I would rather be an exclamation mark than have spammers and sickoes access to my email, name, age and gender!
For example, if you allow email, and allow me to add you as a contact, I will have access to everything that you want private, including your personal profile. It took me two days to figure this out. I now have a fake profile.
People with photos are easy to track down, thanks to the changes in the system, WITHOUT your permission I might add!

I think it's Yahoo's new thing for when people don't have a picture. It's trying to show off the exclamation mark at the end of Yahoo. Personally I think it's dumb, but whatever floats their boat.

That's the new avatar which replaces the gray blockhead smilie. Unless you create a cartoon avatar or upload a personalized avatar, you're stuck with the exclamation mark. It has 5 different colors, but they don't have a specific meaning, they are assigned randomly.

Your posts - I follow you and your answers - you are very consistent and honest - . I am amazed that you use your first name and of course your last name is easy to find. I like your music and I have bought some of your music. Very nice.

It's a replacement for those gray smiley faces.
