Is this art, or is it just a mess? (Flickr link)?

To your eye, and in your opinion, do you see this image as something that has beauty, or is it just junk?

Please be honest. I am the artist, and I have my own opinion about it. I am curious to know how it looks to others. People I know tell me its good. I don't know if they are just being nice. You have nothing to gain or loose, so please tell me what you really think. Thanks.

Update 2:

Thanks for being honest Haylelyn, but I am not looking for emotional support. I actually like this painting very much. Nothing will change that.

I simply want to know what others see. If people like it, I am happy about that. If they don't like it, I don't mind.

To me it's just a mess...Sorry, but it does nothing for me.

It looks like a finger painting of intestines to me. lol

I think this might be a good base for something but at the moment it looks a bit too much like you've just swirled some paint around with a thick brush.

Try to add something to get the viewers' attention and to be the main focal point of the painting.

Also, try using different things to apply paint (doesn't even have to be a brush) this will give it some new textures and make it more interesting.

    Good start, though :)

Very interesting stuff. I don't know how long you have been doing this so it is difficult to fully comment. If this is the beginning of something I will say that you are off to a very good start. I like the technique very much. I would suggest that you do some research,if you haven't already, into field painting, or color field painting, by various artist and get some understanding as to what they were doing and why they were doing it.

It actually is beautiful. I like that you need to think about what it really means. Its not a mess at all. Just go crazy. Looks like a Van Gogh. Kinda like Scream and Starry night who had a baby xD

    Hi Teaim,

Yeah your work is a mess, so just send all your paintings to me, (I'll gladly pay for shipping) and I'll find something to do with them.

    Just kidding.

    Your work is Great!

I'm just reposting this answer here so the unartistic eyed minions will see and read and perhaps learn something.

Believe me. The energy of your surfaces, and beautifully variegated colors are a delight for the eye, and your work shows great promise.

Do yourself a favor and google and read about super stars of painting Rothko, Toby, Olitski, Frankenthaler, Towrkov and Cy Towbley and see how they inform your work.

You are not a copy of any of them but I am giving some artists whose work is from a similar esthetic tribe.

Your surface marks remind me of Mark Toby. I think that his marks are gentle, and almost mystical , while yours are much more robust but there is a certain similarity that I feel here. I catch the kinesthetic side of myself moving my fingers while tracing your swirls in my head.... fun!

You variegated colors remind me of how the giants of color field painting like Jules Olitski, Helen Frankenthaler, and Mark Rothko use color:

Your marks remind me of the energy of super star Cy Towbley:

Also check out another of my favorites Jack Towrkov and see how his work might inform your paintings:

These examples are just the art teacher in me coming out.

What are the sizes of your canvases?

    How did you get started?

What is your inspiration? …. Jazz?

Did you know that painter Larry Rivers was a Jazz saxophonist at a NY club frequented by some of the super painters who found that he was playing what they were painting? So Rivers just started painting what he was playing and became a highly revered, very successful and quite famous artist.

Again Please feel free to Email me at my YA site and I'll give you my real email address and I'd love to talk.

Forgive me for going on so long but your Work is Really Exciting!!!!!

It's posts like yours that make the time I spend in the YA painting section worthwhile!

    Thank you!

EDIT: (You know I was just thinking ... I'm 64 and haven't kept up with all the new artists. I'm gonna be a little upset if this is the work of some hot new talent that I'm not yet aware of and you are just pulling our collective legs.)
