Opinions on The GSMD?

My fiance and I are looking into getting a puppy come the new year. I have always loved Bernese Mountain Dogs as well as Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs. Since Berners are so prone to cancer and short lifespans sometimes of only 6-7 years, we are leaning more towards bringing home a Swissy. I have some experience with the breed from my previous Kennel job but it is limited. I'm just looking for opinions on them from those that might have more experience with the breed.

Update:

Annie- Thanks for the link! I will check that out. Of course, I live in the middle of nowhere so it will be a little more difficult to get to a show but I'm sure I can manage.

StopPuppyMills- I am all for rescuing animals (all of my animals up until this point actually have been from shelters) but I know what breed of dog I'm interested in and I also know I will not find it in a shelter. So that is not a consideration for me.

    Swissies are great!

Go to a dog show (find one close to you on www.infodog.com, search by state) and go see the swissies and decide for yourself.

I too love the Berners, but it was newfies that won out for me.

    Edited to add:

"Stoppuppymillls" doesn't understand that the vast majority of dogs in shelters aren't puppy mill dogs or even BYB purebreds, but people who just let their mixed breeds (usually pits) have pups... and most in shelters are older dogs - dumped when they get out of the "cute puppy" stage and haven't been trained or have other behavioral issues, caused by irresponsible owners. The purebreds -- even badly bred ones -- even older ones (up to a point) are snapped up when they hit the shelters.

Most of us don't mind pits, but they aren't our breed of choice for a family pet.

Well, this probably isn't what you want to read, but my advice is to adopt a dog that will be killed if it doesn't find a home. Rescue dogs make such great companions. They seem to know you saved them and act accordingly. So, you get a great companion and save a life at the same time. I can't think of anything better than that!

Good luck and enjoy whatever dog you decide upon.
