To GSD breeders, what are your thoughts on white German Shepherds?
If you have them in a litter, what do you do with them?
Do you believe they are inferior?
Do you think they should be allowed into shows or be marketed as a separate breed (e.g. Swiss Shepherd)?
I own two white GSDs, both of which are stunningly beautiful, capture the attention of strangers, have amazing temperaments and have excellent genes, and hip and elbow scores.
Several years ago, white GSDs were seen as genetically inferior and even disposed of at birth. I'm just curious as to what your opinions of them are now.
And I just want to make sure you know this isn't an attack on black and tan GSDs (I'm planning on owning one when I'm older) or a claim that white's are better than black and tan, I honestly just want your opinion.
Thanks!
This is my oldest boy, Neigepearl White Phoenix a.k.a Loki (Norse God of Mischief, lol)

I don't breed, but assuming I did, I would simply sell on a spay/neuter contract as a pet.
No, I do not believe they are inferior.
I do believe that as a result of many many years of culling the color, and the subsequent breeding of whites simply for the color, the gene pool is less than desirable. I am not saying all are bad, but in ANY breed when you breed for a particular color, problem start arising. When you start breeding for one color, like the white, where in order to assure a white, you need to breed to a white, you are SEVERELY limiting the gene pool, never a good thing.
I am torn on this issue. I fully believe in breeding for the standard, whether I agree or not. When we start picking and choosing which part of the standard is "important" (our opinion) then we start creating dogs farther and farther from what the breed is supposed to be. What *my* opinion on white GSDs is does not matter. What if I decided that floppy ears were better suited to the breed?
Now if the SV suddenly decided to accept white GSDs, I would not oppose it.
I am happy your dogs have great hips and elbows, and temperament, but with ANY GSD, black and tan, sable or otherwise, I value working ability.
Just my opinion, as you asked.

Will star for my GSD breeders.

No, the *color* does not bring any health issues, but a history of bad breeding practices may have.
Like I said, when you breed for only one aspect, color, look, whatever, you start to lose in others. When you limit your gene pool to achieve that color, problems arise.

Ok I am so jealous of you right now!
Not only have you got a gorgeous dog- but you have even got one from the breeder I was going to get one from!
In Australia at least, the breeders clubs are now trying to make the White German Shepherd either it's own breed, or a colour variation within the breed.
For the first time ever this year's Royal Melbourne Show featured theWhite Swiss Shepherd as a breed, but now all the responisble breeders (like Neigepearl) are marketing their dogs as White German Shepherds- which is exactly what they are.
There is no evidence that the White shepherds have any health problems associated with their colouring- it is just a normal colour within the breed, that has always been frowned upon, and pups were culled at birth.
In Germany, they used to see white pups as bad luck, which may have been the beginning of not accepting this colour within the breed standard.

I'm not a GSD breeder, but personally I have no issues with the whites....I think they are mainly only pet quality though & since the GSD is a herding/working breed....some people are against...I've heard people say they are weak nerved.
I seen one last Halloween while taking my son trick or treating....it was in a fenced yard & was behaving like a psycho....could have been the costumes, kids, or bad training..I don't know for sure.
ETA- Second to Chihuahua's I love & admire the GSD...but *IF* I ever own one again, it will NOT be a white one.

im not a breeder....but....im really good friends with the breeder i got my two dogs from....and they dont breed dogs that have ever thrown a white puppy....but i suppose if they had one...they would sell it cheaper than their show dogs to someone whos just gonna have a pet. and probably retire either the sire or b*tch of that litter. white GSDs are DISQUALIFIED from every AKC show...and are NOT something desirable when breeding... along with blues and light washed out colors....and NO they are not another breed...they are a coat mutation of a German Shepherd Dog.
idk about inferior...but undesirable?...for me? ...yes....
i still will not own or breed a white shepherd...i personally just find the red and blacks and tan and blacks more beautiful (but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, lol)
