If N is nickels, and D is dimes:
N + D = 150
N = D + 70
Substituing:
(D + 70) + D = 150
2D = 80
D = 40
N = 110

n + d = 150
n = d + 70
(d + 70) + d = 2d + 70 = 150
2d = 80
d = 40

150 nickels and dimes
N+D=150
70 more nickels than dimes
N=D+70
substitute for N
(D+70)+D=150
2D+70=150
2D=80
D=40

A solution would mean the two lines intersect. Since, they are boths set equal to x, you can set the two equations equal and solve for y 2y+6=3y+10, so 6=y+10, or y=-4. Plug this into the first equation to get: 2(-4)+6=-2. Hence, they intersect at (-2,-4)
