Pell Grant for second semester?

I'm currently receiving the Pell Grant for this Fall, and I know I will get the other half in Spring.

My question is, since I am relying on the Pell to pay for my tuition, if I register for classes starting November 15 (the day registration starts for Spring), and my Pell doesn't get disbursed until January (10 days before my classes start), will I get dropped from the classes I registered for, or will I be able to keep the classes I registered for (keep my place), and the Pell will just pay for it when the disbursement date comes around? How does that work?

Thanks for any help! Will choose best answer! =]

Although the Pell may not be disbursed to you until January, your school has records of you receiving the Pell and will "save" your spot in that class and should not drop you or deny you to register for classes, even if you miss the "payment deadline", as classes fill up fairly quick.

Now SOME schools may expect for you to pay for your tuition out-of-pocket and just refund you the money once your Pell has been disbursed, but that is rare and you should check with your school's financial aid office to be sure.

The bill for your tuition won't be due until after the first of the year, usually a few days to a week after your disbursement date. the school has your records and understands that you are waiting on a grant.

contact your financial aid office to find out how they handle the disbursements. When I went to school, we received a check in the mail that we had to take to the financial aid office and sign over to the school for our tuition. They may not handle it that way any more.

For most schools they have the payment deadline dates on the day of financial aid disbursement or a few days later (especially if there a school where the majority receive aid). Also, most schools will not drop you from classes until a later date incase your just late on making a payment.

Best source for this information is your college/university's Financial Aid Office, or Bursar's office, the people who take your money. Check the Registration booklet/online information. Those sources usually contain a calendar that lists the deadlines for registration and payments.

In general, though, the university usually allows quite a bit of time between the registration period and the deadline for tuition and fees payments. Every college/ univ will have different dates. Check your own.

yes, fill out the fafsa asap...for 2010-2011 asap. Even though its a little late you can still get $$ for college. You will need your 2009 tax forms since you will need to put info on your FAFSA about your taxes. Its not too late but the longer you delay in the FAFSA the less funds you get for school. Make sure you turn in the necessary documents to your schools financial aid department so that you can start in Jan '11. Good Luck:)
