Ammonia is strongly attracted to water. As the Windex dries out and evaporates on the outside of the tank, or even the windows in the same room the ammonia becomes a gas in the room's air. Where ever that ammoniated air is in contact with water the ammonia will preferentially leave the air for the water.

Will it kill your fish? Probably not the first few times. It depends on how much Windex you squirt out of the bottle, how big the tank is since the bigger the tank the more diluted the ammonia will be, the size and bio-activity of the aquarium filtration system, and the species of fish you have.

Using an ammonia product near the tank shortly after cleaning the filter and the gravel would be bad timing. This would be when the tank's bio-active population of ammonia neutralizing bacteria would be at a low point and in shock from stress. when this and some other variables happen to coincide, the Windex would start a disaster. Using ammonia near the tank is like betting double or nothing over and over again. It only takes one time and you lose it all.

Yes, It is absolutely safe to clean the outside of your tank with Windex. Just be sure to spray your towel away from the tank. This will help to make sure it doesn't get in the water.

it's highly advised that you do not. Getting a small amount in a tank can cause big problems. I still clean mine with it though. Spray just the bottom of the tank though and wipe it to the top.

if the tank is covered and you spray the windex to the bottom half of the tank and wipe up to the top or spray the windex onto the towel than wipe the latter would be safer.

Yes, just make sure you don't spray any into the fish tank. and I'd recommend spraying your paper towel first with the windex, then rubbing the glass with the towel, that way the particles aren't flying everywhere (which could possibly make it into the tank).

i personally would not ... it is an aerosolized chemical and could get into the tank ... i use one of those mr clean magic erasers with plain water and i am impressed with the results ... and no chemicals :O)

Totally, i do it all the time. It's only harmfull if you spray the inside.
