what do i do after an anemone is sucked though a pump?
Worst day ever. My new rose bulb tip anemone got sucked completely through the pump while I was at work. The anemone started moving last night so I was anxious to get home from work to see how it turned out.
I look at my tank and freak out as the water is super cloudy and my anemone is nowhere to be seen. Later found parts, small parts, of the anemone floating around and the pump had lots of meat wrapped around the impeller shaft.
I did the only thing i could think to do. In a 36 gallon tank, I did a bout 8 gallon water change. Went to the store to get 22 more gallons and mixing 10 gallons now for anouther water change. I also placed a large bag of carbon in a high flow area in my HOB refugium.
What else should I do to prevent toxins from crashing my tank? Do blendered Anemone even release toxin or is that just something that happens when they slowly die naturally?

1.6 gallon drink dispenser. Just set it up last night. Got anouther to work on a more advanced rig. Gonna install a small pump in the bottom half and run some pipes so that the bottom can be used as a refugium.
4 AnswersFish1 decade agoMonti cap frag is bleaching. How can I stop it?
I got a small monti cap frag over the weekend. Put it under my dual 150w MHs close to the top of the 36g tank.
Within 2 days the center turned bright white. A superman monti I had gotten from the same guy turned half white with what looked like a small amount of brown dust where over the white part.
Thinking that the only possibility is bleaching from to much light, I put the superman at the bottom of the tank. I put the monti cap in my 20L with quad t5 24w. 2x actinic and 2x 18000k. Thought it would be good at the top of this tank since there is alot less lumen going on than the MH was putting out.
This morning before work, I noticed the superman had gone completely white overnight. Now, after working all day. The monti cap went from 25% white to about 50% white and what appears to be a slime or mucus coming from where the white zone is. I'm guessing this is from expelling algae.
What can I do to stop the bleaching? Can I leave it in the dark for a couple day and hope it stops? I've never had bleached coral so I have no idea what the problem is or what to do about it before it's lost. If it does fully bleach can it recover or is it dead? I can care less for the superman but I really want to save my purple rimmed monti cap.

150w hqi lights for the aquarium have a blue tint to them but a 14000k hid on automotives looks pure blue.
1 AnswerFish1 decade agoHow to remove thick cloudiness from new tank caused by caribbisea live sand argonite?
New 20 long reef tank. Put the sand in, then water, then salt. The sand made the tank very milky type cloudy and the tank is now at about 20 hours running and still cloudy. The pack of bio magnet stuff that came in the sand was a no-go as it was busted. I'm running a new aquaclear 30 with a second bag of carbon sitting in the tank and it's still not really clearing it up.
The tank is also heated to 82 degree with a 425 gph powerhead.
5 AnswersFish1 decade agoreef tank, effects of upgrading from 100w t5 to 300w MH?
What negative effects could I have from upgrading my 36 gallon tank from 100w of t5 to 300 watts of MH 14000K? getting two 150w clamp on JBJ vipers.
The tank is fairly deep and the rock don't come up to close to the top. The tank is mostly LPS, xenia, green star polyp, and ricordia florida. I have a Long tentacle Anemone which is the main reason for upgrading.
Since I have a duncan coral and ricordia florida at the top of my rock work, do these need to be moved to the bottom to prevent burning? same with my pulsing xenia. Since they are 150w bulbs and not 400w bulbs, Would it be ok to leave everything at the top of the tank where it is since it's just a medium intensity MH?
This gives me 8.3 watts per gallon of great light so I can keep SPS, Clam, and make the anemone happy. My only concern is the effect on other coral since I'm not sure if these corals can recieve to much light.

Frogspawn,
Hammer
Duncan,
Pulsing xenia.
Ricordia Florida
Plated Hydnophoria. (has been loosing it's neon green and turning brown. Don't know why)

Long tentacle Anemone
3 AnswersFish1 decade agoIs my Long tentacle anemone stuck behind the rock?
My Anemone got up and moved one day and ended up behind the rock. It's been there for about a week now and has not done much for digging its foot into the sand. I'm starting to fear that it is stuck. Is it able to move against water current to back out? Can it actually squeeze between tight spaces and will do so it it wants to? do I need to move a power head to help blow it back out or leave it alone?

1 AnswerFish1 decade agoWhy do scarlet hermit crab shells look like rock?
Why do the shells look like rock or like they are completely encrusted with something?
Most hermits such as blue legged hermits, have shells that look the same as when the snail had it. Every image I find on scarlet hermits show them in what looks like an old fossilized shell.
No other hermit that I have found shows any images of a similar shell.
Here is a good image of mine hanging out of his thick rock-like shell.
2 AnswersFish1 decade agohow accurate is an ATO system?
I want an ATO system for my tank that isn't overly expensive but needs to be accurate. My tank is only 36 gallon so I try to keep the water level within 1/2 inch consistency. This has me manually TO daily. what are some good ATO systems that will refill the tank before a 1/2 inch drop.
1 AnswerFish1 decade agocan i feed a long tentacle anemone small freshwater fish?
some places say to feed them brine and mysis shrimp and some say to feed large meaty chunks. Can I feed a long tentacle anemone fish such a neon tetras, black skirt tetras, typical feeder fish, etc?
3 AnswersFish1 decade agoexperienced advise on placing a Long Tentacle Anemone in Aquarium?
Could use some experienced advise and info on placing a Long Tentacle Anemone in the tank. Here is the current image of it... http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/9397/img0937745...
I want the anemone in or close to the open space in my sand so i placed it in the area and used a rock to keep the water movement from blowing it to the corner of the tank. This is my first anemone so I don't really know how they work. How quickly does it move around if it wants to move and how long should it take to bury it's foot into the sand? Is the the best I can do as far as trying to get it where I want it?
Right now, I just want this thing to bury it's foot just to show me some action. After that, it can do as it pleases.

5 AnswersFish1 decade agocan i grow coral in a 10 gallon tank with 6500k CFL, no actinic?
Here is an image of the tank... http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/1632/cimg1499563801...
It's my quarantine tank. I just keep my extra rock and a couple nerites in it. Everything is good on this tank for coral except the lighting. The clamp lamps are each 27 watt 6500k CFLs so the wattage is even great. Can corals be grown in this tank without using actinic lighting?

1 AnswerFish1 decade agohow do frogspawn coral reproduce other than head splitting?
I've seen torch coral babies on the shelf at the LFS. These were tiny torches where the torches being sold had been placed. They were not even big enough to have a skeleton. how does this happen?
My frogspawn has a green spot about 2mm wide that looks like a tine frog is coming out of it or something. I've really no idea what this is. It could just be a blimish on my coral. In what ways do frogs reproduce other than splitting? This frog has just recently split.

4 AnswersFish1 decade agowhat is wrong with my (non)pulsing xenias w/ pics?
Today, My xenias just stopped pulsing and got small. They are not closed up but look like they have all the sudden gone limp. The main stalks still look good but the polyps appear to have problems.
I did a fairly large water change this morning.... before all my coral and livestock were fully awake. Only the actinics were on. The whites come on an hour later. The water change was roughly 30-35% PH buffed to 8.3, salinity was increased in the tank from 1.022 to 1.024 using new water that was 1.025. This is a small increase, I felt my tank PH was being a bit to low for coral at the 1.022. The temp of the new water was 80 degree (heater in the bucket) to match the tank. This seemed like a great water change, I'm having a hard time thinging it could be a problem in any way.
I did move the rock around, thinking of repositioning it cause I don't want the xenia to spread to other rock. I've done this many times though. I don't know of anything else that could have possible changed other than adding a new frag last night. This was a small neon green star polyp stuck to a dead branch of coral.
The tank is a 12 gallon cube.

1 AnswerFish1 decade agois it normal for coral and other stuff to be stinky?
I've had my reef tank set up for a little while now. I didn't know alot about it when i first got into salt water and the live rock was not cured. It has been in the tank for well over a month now so die-off has been managed. However, If I pull anything out of my aquarium, it has a stinky odor to it.
The water does not have odor, just the things in the water when they are pulled out. Tonight I reached in and cut a frag from my pulsing xenia to put in my other tank and even though the xenia is looking very healthy at all times, It had a stinky odor to it. Live rock was more understandable but is it normal for a healthy coral to be stinky also?
2 AnswersFish1 decade agoHow loud is a tiger pistol shrimp?
i got a tiger pistol and it's still a baby at just over an inch. most forums have people saying that it is loud and can be heard outside the house. however, that don't seem very loud compared to the 200 decibels that it's claimed to do.
for something that is simply a loud snap how is it claimed that it is over 200 db?
