Employee who consistently doesn't meet production levels?
I work in a facility with a heavily monitored production requirement. Not meeting the min for 2 weeks in a row will earn a call into the boss' office for a meeting/warning.
There is this woman in the office who nods off at her desk for a few seconds at a time several times a day (at least 3-4 times). Couple times she actually fell asleep and was snoring. My desk is right next to hers so its hard not to notice this happening + the boss has "jokingly" called her out several times out in the open. ...and b/c of this sleeping at the desk her productions levels are about 1/2 of the min requirement. Even on the days she doesn't nod off her production levels are still below the min requirement. She was hired this past July and has been this way since day 1. All the boss has done so far is call her in for a single warning meeting. I know this supposedly is none of my biz BUT I'm working on the same project along with one other person. The ONLY reason we were assigned to this project is take up her slack.
If you were the boss what would you have done about this unproductive employee?

Sounds like this employee is either related to someone in upper management, she has a disability, or she is well connected to higher up, maybe even someone's girlfriend.
When the boss isn't doing anything about it, all you can do is handle your work and do it well. If you ever get to a point where your production has always been excellent and then all of a sudden you get called in, start looking for another job. Word is, companies are chopping at the drop of sweat. Plus if you don't have connections in the company, or if you aren't "tight" with managers, you are just a "dime a dozen". Someone can replace you in a heart beat. Not many companies are loyal to "team players" anymore. Look out for yourself. Do what comes natural for you and you'll make it to the top.

Okay, here is a hard lesson that I learned this past year. Just because the boss has not told YOU that he has reprimanded or counseled the other employee on this does not mean that it is not happening.
I made the mistake of "venting" on my boss about them not holding another employee accountable. I was told that it was not appropriate for them to tel ME if they are counseling another employee and that it could have very well be done, but as an employee it is not my responsibility to manage my co workers but to make sure that my job is done and to the best of my ability.
Of course I was irritated because I felt that I got no where with the issue.
All can say is very diplomatically make your opinion known that you are worried about this employee because you think they might be sick or something. Believe me, if you go in there saying what you are saying here...same thing that happened with me with happen with you. They will basically think you are a busy body who is worried about everyone else and trying to start trouble.
It was far from my intention but the way the bosses saw it. THey basically told me in good HR terms to mind my own business! Just do your job the best you can and if she is truely bad, it will catch up.

Obviously the boss knows she's unproductive. Unfortunately for you tho, they are not doing anything about it except to talk to her.
Personally I have NO tolerance for employees who nod off/sleep at their desks. She would have been warned about sleeping and production. Immediate termination follows if she is nods off/sleeps at her desk again, no matter what her production levels are. ...so based on what you said she would have been terminated by the end of August if I were her boss.
IMO, sounds like your boss is too "soft" on the employees.

I would. maybe they don't realize how unproductive she is being. Maybe "someone" needs to send an anonymous note to the boss(es).

most companies would have gotten rid of her by now
