I started with a fully manual Pentax MX, and collected some of the finer Pentax lenses, so I've stuck with Pentax. I was thrilled with my ZX-M precursor to the ZX-50, because it did everything my MX did that I liked -- complete with depth-of-field preview. My older lenses work fine in manual mode, which I prefer, anyway. It's a nice machine. Keep an eye out for older pentax lenses; some of them will not work with the newer spiffy automatic functions, but in manual mode you'll find they have superior optics and can be found at good prices.

The Pentax K1000 is a manual metering camera ... that is to say there are no "auto" options like shutter speed or aperture priority settings. There were a number of auto exposure cameras made that had NO manual settings. Those will have to be avoided in order to comply with your instructors camera specifications. Okay, so what other cameras are equivalent? Canon and Nikon both currently make equivalents to the Pentax. Yes, they include auto exposure and auto focus, but they can be used in manual exposure and focus modes. Why mention Canon and Nikon only? If you even THINK you might become a pro, those are the two manufacturers that about 90% of the working pros use. In addition there are plenty of used ones that can get you started without you having to stop eating for a while after you buy your camera.

I don't have one myself, but I do a couple of other people who do. They seem to like it a whole lot. Look up KEH Used Cameras for more lens. If you want more information about film stuff look up APUG(analog photography users group).

That's scary that people don't know Pentax, it used to be the one of the most popular camera brands.
It's a good camera, should do everything you need it to :)

Pentax is a well respected brand if you ask experienced photographers. If you don't have a manual yet for your camera, try this.

About the different settings, they are exactly the same with dSLRs.
