What is "College Algebra"?

Where I went to college, all Freshman were required to take Calculus, so there was no "College Algebra". What is typically taught in such a course?

High school algebra. These days (and former days as well, but more so these days) many Freshmen are not ready for calculus. In the U.S.A probably most college Freshmen are in this category.

There is also often a course called "pre-calculus" which is a hodgepodge of basic algebra, a little trigonometry, a little analytic geometry (sometimes) and basic ideas about functions. Usually college algebra is a prerequisite (or equivalent math in high school).

There are still some students who take calculus as freshmen. Probably not many of them ask questions here.

College algebra is the same thing as algebra 2 in high school
