What can I do to help my Black Lab with his dry skin?
I have a 3.5 years old Black Lab named Boulder that I recently adopted and he has very dry skin. The vet put him on benadryl and he still is constantly scratching. Where I live, there are no fleas or ticks nor do I see them on him. He is on Blue Buffalo diet, gets enough exercises, and is in general a very healthy dog. But I just can't seem to find something to help him with his excessive dry skin. Please help :)

Limit baths unless they are absolutely necessary, or simply hose him off if he gets dirty. If he does need a bath, follow up with a moisturizing conditioner for dogs.
Blue Buffalo is a good dog food. You can try supplementing his diet with fish oil caplets, which can be found in drug stores and grocery stores. The high levels of omega oils in fish oils work great for healthier skin and coat and help combat dry skin. Being a Lab I don't think you will have much trouble feeding it to him, you can puncture a few capsules and squirt it onto his food or feed him a few as a treat. Results can be seen in about two or three weeks with most dogs.
You should also consider allergies more seriously. Even though Blue Buffalo is a good dog food, he may be allergic to an ingredient in it. Crazy to think that some dogs can be allergic even to bland, simple ingredients like chicken or rice! You may have to play the 'elimination game' for a while, changing food, changing house cleaning products, eliminating lawn products.. But hopefully it will pay off. Good luck, I hope Boulder feels better and less itchy soon!

First, what brand of food is she on? Just because it claims to be natural doesn't necessarily mean it's good, so look into switching foods if necessary. Fish or olive oil on the food every day helps a lot. Medicated baths every 1-2 weeks can clear up dry skin as well. Try to find something with tea tree oil, tar, or salacylic acid in it. Oatmeal is often prescribed for dry skin, but it has little effect on severe dander problems. Make sure you scrub the shampoo in well (try using a rubber curry comb from the grooming aisle of your petstore) and then let it soak at least 10 minutes before rinsing. You can follow up with a moisturizing conditioner for another 10 minutes if you like. Good luck!

if it is a long haired dog, continuous brushing helps the dogs skin produce natural oils and if it is a short haired dog try some baby oil and again brush often or massage the skin. the underlying cause needs to be found which could be anything from a fungas, parasite, allergy to cosmetic, allergy to diet.... but if it is just minor dry skin this should take care of the problem.
Amswer.... To get to the "root" (no pun intended) of the problem and stop your pooches dry skin you could add some vitamin E capsules 1 (One). 200 mg daily to his food. If your air is dry this could be making the problem worse. A humidifier might help. Oh, the vitamin therapy is only to be used for a short time. (10 days)

You could try adding some Fish oil to the food, stick a pin in the capsule and add 1/2 of that to the food.
Is your dog urinating more than usual or panting alot?
