why are atheists so threatened by religions/(especially christians)?

why do people attack the image of a person or a group of people, who are sworn to a good cause, regardless if they are wrong at times or not since we are all human and make mistakes and that will not change.. but why on earth would anyone be foolish enough to try to prove wrong something or someone that means you well and can obviously be a benefit to your life??

Raises a big eyebrow as to how would that really serve you and your future to try to eliminate that which is good. If there was no religion our knowledge of God we would certainly kill each other much fast and much more carelessly, or are you too blind to see this?

Update:

@ red and corrupted - you both speak as if your hands are clean thus you can be the judge of the sins of the flesh. we are all responsible for eating the "fruit from the tree of knowledge" because we all have disobeyed the laws of Love and God.. it is as if you accept imperfection as the way things were meant to be and you forgot that you, as well as the rest of all mankind, we have made things the way they are not God.

Update 2:

white pride your name of segregation speaks for itself.. what we believe should have no bearing on living the way you please to live but just like it burns to touch fire there are consequences to living by your own rules and not Gods, if history hasn't shown all you "nonbeliever" that much then you haven't been paying attention. The simple fact is that it is not God that condemns you to an eternity of suffering it is your choice to live against God.

(I wonder sometimes if your brains are all functioning at the same frequency as mine in this matter) We have to take responsibility.

Update 3:

Corrupted - perfection is just that, perfection.. no flaws, no death, no sin, no hate, no mistakes, no sorrow, no pain, no evil, etc.. grab the dictionary on this one you don't even need the bible.. You must think that your judgment or any "man's" judgment of how things should be is better than God's.. The Almighty.. which means you and many other atheists fail to come to terms with the concept that God is Love, unlimited Love.

Update 4:

Rolling stoner--- That is precisely what I been thinking, but how could they be so weak minded, wouldn't some bone in their body tell them that going against God is a big nono?.. idk, well said though thank you.

Update 5:

xctra9009 I totally agree with you, christians are far from perfect, but what does that have to do with anything?? you still have a responsibility towards love and perfection and deep down you know this, and you know God fits somewhere along these lines.. Are we going to wait until the world "spews" us out before we realize that "hey, wait a minute these "religious" people were on to something with that love GOD and love your neighbor stuff.. Maybe there is a Source of Love.. Maybe I was selfish all along to think I was more important that to find out more about such a beautiful part of life..."(lightbulb)

Update 6:

Punch - doing the will of God is simply loving all goodness and life and fixing ourselves from sin. This is called repentance.

Update 7:

The_Doc_Man - I will ask you this one small but very important question that you can apply to any situation even this one..:

"What would love do?"

Now what other question could possibly be more important?

This is what a true believer focuses on. The Love of God.

Update 8:

Is love really that bad?

Update 9:

Derek - I agree to an extent but you haven't done enough homework on God and you're put too much attention on the structure of "religion" as if religion was the source. No harm done, just a footnote for you.

Update 10:

The majority of you all have put the faults of man and man's religion on God's name as if God was the cause of religions buffonary. I don't think anyone really got the plight of my question..

It is that we are all one unit with a common goal of becoming perfect. So why fight each other, call each other names like children, point the finger at one another, think the worst of our neighbor without even knowing them. It's just ironic that "nonbelievers" could swing at God as the problem and not false teaching.

Religion is NOT God.

Apparently Atheists don't want to look at the negative side of things. When they dismiss God, heaven, and hell-they don't have to look at the negative side to unbelief. They tell themselves that there is no heaven, no hell, and no such thing as God. In doing so, they don't have to consider or worry about these things. They don't have to be concerned about something they feel doesn't exist. They want to fool themselves into disbelief. No God=No bad or hell for not believing. It's the easy way out. Apart from mankind's laws, they have nothing to fear if they do something bad and wrongful.

I am not threatened by ANY religion. I am threatened by the people who blindly follow a religion without asking intelligent questions regarding the teachings of that religion.

The ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, the Spanish Inquisition, the Crusades, the Dark Ages, and more recently, violent anti-gay action all tell me there is more to it than "if they are wrong at times" to this. The disturbing habit for Christians to enact violence against others is just not acceptable any more. (And no, Muslim violence isn't acceptable either.)

What I fear is that too many people use religion as an excuse to commit heinous crimes and then justify it in the name of their god. And I see that in the headlines often enough that you cannot say it doesn't happen. BTW, if you DARE to say, ..."well, they weren't true Christians" ... - that is a logical fallacy called the "no true Scotsman" fallacy. So don't even try. Look it up sometime.

"why do people attack the image of a person or a group of people, who are sworn to a good cause" ... I attack the "good cause" because it seems overly violent and dismissive of individual rights and dignity for anyone who is even a little bit different. Hatred of other religions? That just fans the flames and gives the other religions an excuse to retaliate. Hatred of homosexuality? That just ignores the fact that we can see biological markers (not necessarily genetic, but sometimes developmental) that show homosexuality is often inborn. And yet you punish people because of the way they were born. Then you want them to commit a crime against nature... THEIR nature, not yours. If only you could see that fact, and it IS a fact.

If you want to take responsibility, just remember that phrase: If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Then take some responsibility yourself. Take responsibility for endorsing a hateful group who is NOT up to a good cause.

i believe in what religion brings, faith and hope but not what religion is. i believe if there was a god it was up to yourself that could influence the world, that a prayer can be answered by yourself and that a prayer that couldn't be would just be destiny. religion has brought so much conflict and fear in to the world that the idea of a higher purpose seems so little compared to how many life's suffer and and die every second. would write more but could go on

You make good points Pontiff, would actually be intresting to have a debate with you :-)

I noticed a lot (not all of course) of Christians on here spewing quotes and talking about how everyone else is wrong and they should see the light. To me, it's condescending, not someone trying to do good.

I just noticed you added quotes to your answer too.

I could care less what religion someone is, I DO care when those same people evangelize their PERSONAL beliefs and are willing to use violence, shady legislation, and intimidation to achieve their goal

EDIT - what you fail to understand - "perfection" is a relative ideal

Not threatened. Just a little worried what they may do, all in the name of god.

Because they are ruining the world with their stupid wars and crap. And there is no benefit to believing in make believe crap and trying to force it on others. go outside, ride a bike, play with a dog. ( Dogs are godlike)

I'm not sure "threatened" is the right word here.

I think they are more "annoyed", "bemused", and "dumbfounded" than anything else.

"regardless if they are wrong at times"

Because those people who are just so innocent and only "wrong at times" sponsor and fund organizations that occasionally bomb abortion clinics and behead infidels.

Oh, not to mention the whole disregard of that little Separation of Church and State thing.

because you believe what they hate most-- the idea of a God who will judge and banish them to a place of outer darkness...
