Musicians Post Your Projects?
As part of an effort on my part to get the musicians from R&P to record and share their work, I have been doing a monthly post for musicians. Look for one of these questions on the first of each month. I've been doing these for over a year now.
Here are my recordings for the month:
http://wireandstring.bandcamp.com/album/november-2...
Finally finished a studio version of "Switchblade" that i had previously done a rough campfire version of (can be found on the september recordings) lyrics are changed a little. "Hong Kong dollar" is kinda harder rockin post-punk than i normally do. the instrumentation for "Swanson's" are entirely recorded with a cigar box with a contact pickup and an elastic string run top to bottom so that the farther it is opened the higher pitched the tone. i had burned my lead fretting finger on the oven (not horribly, but i couldn't really play guitar for about week) so i decided to try and make a non-fret related string instrument and that is what i came up with.
MQ: Musicians: would you post some of your current projects?
Everyone else: would you mind having a listen and offering any constructive criticism?
@johnny bliss- yeah, thats how we like to do it. welcome, and always happy to have new participants.
the vocal effect on hong kong dollar was a custom effect using my yamaha magic stomp pedal.
my wonderful girlfriend is once again responsible for the art this month and the compliment will be passed on.
and yeah, swanson's... it's really just not as fleshed out as the other two, more of an expirement that turned into a song instead of a song that has some expiriments in it. it feels to me like it should be just the first verse of a longer song where some more things happen.
oh yeah, and alternate lyrics for if i had kept the marijuana lyric from the original version of switchblade, instead of the last verse it would go:
i was gonna kill you
but now i am pretty high
so i think i'll go to sonic
get a smoothy and french fries
ok, home from work and ready to start listening
duke- and i though you were just about kicking @ss and chewing buble gum, you play guitar too. nice.
gibb- wow. thats all i got to say. i dont know if there was a focus on the drumming this month, but everything about the drumming, the playing, the mixing, the recording, it all seemed to be at the highest level i have heard from you and it really pays off in a big way and takes your music to the next level. on the whole i thought the production was some of the best work you have done from that standpoint also. just great.
jerry- not at all surprised that you are a classically trained pianist based on your knowledge and answers. good luck in music university (which one did you get into?)
johnny bliss- sounds good. there is always room for good well written singer-songwriter stuff with boldly and shamelessly off-key singing. i enjoyed it.
hepcat- just when i was starting to think you were treading water a little bit the last few months you make a giant leap forward. the best songwriting i have heard from you. the best production i have heard from you. the ambitiousness of lunar table is impressive in and of itself, but the fact that you pulled it off and made a track that stays interesting for 9 minutes of changes and experiments in production, man its just really great. i really think you made a big breakthrough this month. i hope you dont mind my taking one of your 500 free dowloads for this one.
shotgun- bikeage is better than the original. of course, i am not much of a descendents fan, just to put that in context. i heart fun happy hopping bass lines. really outstanding reading on that song. i thought grotesque was a lot of fun too. love the leaning on the melodica, i might even mix the bass a pinch lower and let the melodica be featured even more.
mike h- you might want to give the website i am using a try. it lets you upload wav files so you dont need to worry about getting things in format for youtube, it lets you determine the copyright status of your music and it gives you a platform to sell them at whatever price you determine. i'd love to hear your stuff.

So, recently I have started to record my stuff, so you can consider me a newboy in this event. I love writing stuff, and I hope that you guys can give a listen
I have 3 songs, and I have an album wrapped around in my mind. It should be done for December..

I personally think the last one is the best.
Anyways I enjoy any of your thoughts, as they will help me along the way.
@Wire And String: I gotta admit, your stuff is different, but I like different. "Hong Kong Dollar" is a great track, especially that bass, that was a great feature.
Switchblade is great too, I thought it was a bit rough, but nevertheless it was great. I was actually a bit sidetracked when I heard your type of style actually xD
Swanson's didn't really stand out too well to me. It didn't have that wow factor like the first two..
@likegibberish: I gotta admit, you're stuff is great.
I heard "im not myself", and it was a great rock tune. I think the bad quality really adds the effect to the song, because you get that fuzz in your voice and in the guitar. Also the guitar stands out.
Same goes with "No Hassle", that bad quality makes everything better in my opinion. I loved the solo too, that was actually great, something that like that was something that the song needed. Great follow-up.
Waste my time is my favourite tune. I absolutely love that intro, it really gives me the mood that the song will be great, and it stands out along the way, great job.
@Shot Gun: I really enjoyed "Grotesque". The mood of the song is wonderful, and the vocals really stand out. That was a harmonica right? I don't really know, I'm not good with instruments. Anyways, excellent structuring of that song.
@One Hep Cat: I love your music, it's great.
I just heard "Johnny Meets The River", I'm glad you dedicated a song to me. lol Anyways, it really sets the mood of Halloween, which is great.
And I heard "Burn The Land Down" like 1000 times already lol, great song.
I'll hear the 9 minute song another time, alright?
Wow, everybody is really good here ;)
I will edit and listen to the other songs people have wrote, it is only fair right? :)

Hey hey. Good month for me.

Stream "Grotesque," my new adaptation of a classic Neptunian folk song.
And, from yet another unreleased RYM project, here's my cover of "Bikeage" by the Descendents. If nothing else, listen to it for the one-string acoustic no-wave guitar solo.
http://www.upload-mp3.com/files/239904_yfcrd/bikea... (to stream)
http://www.mediafire.com/?5a022e2gwewxo0t (to download)
But wait, there's more: Here are three songs that I recorded and never did anything with. If you have the time, check them out.
http://www.mediafire.com/?43xl5l29h1z94b9
Heated Pool is pretty weak, but I have a soft spot for I Wish That You Would Stop Talking. John Hardy (traditional, but I based mine mostly on the Carter Family version) is a big mess, but it's kind of cool when it works.
And there's nothing new from the Fambly Band, but if you've missed a month, here's the link:
http://nathanael.bandcamp.com/
And, one very last thing (before I start listening to the work of others): If you ever hear music on myspace that you want to download (like mine, for example), but no link is provided, enter the full url here - http://file2hd.com/Default.aspx?myspacemp3 - and download away.
Okay, that was a mouthful, but here goes.
--------------------
Wire/String:
I've added this new version of Switchblade to an ever-growing mental list called Crying Music (includes most music I like, really). Perhaps I'm moved more easily (and more often) than most people, but even with the whole murder bit, I was terribly moved.
I want you to write a musical based on Hong Kong Dollar. That can be the only song, and you can just put some post-modern fourth-wall breaking in between it. (It's played eight or nine times.) I love the echo you've got going on the cymbal things.
Swanson's is a throwback to some classic Wire and String tracks.
-----------------
Hep Cat:
Johnny Meets the River is almost too dramatic to handle. It might have been cool to hear the guitar pattern at the beginning with vocals on top, because both work so well separately. (That might be a pretty good representation of the modern weapons philosophy - Why not add more?)
You know I love Burn the Land Down. Exciting.
I think I need some time to process Lunar Tumble. I'll say I liked it, and that'll have to be enough for now.
---------
Likegibberish:
I was half-listening to a conversation a few days ago, and I caught the phrase "It was like gibberish!" It was a surprisingly poignant moment.
Anyway: If I'm ever suicidal, I'm inviting you right now to talk me down (mostly an iambic line).
I'm Not Myself is tremendously exciting. Great solo.
Drums are great on No Hassle (drums are great everywhere, actually; you doing something new, or have I just not been paying attention?)
Trouble Everywhere is old and new (or old and young), each in the best sense possible. I wanna dance with somebody who loves me.
--------------
Johnny Bliss: A melodica, actually. I'm a big fan.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melodica
I'm enjoying your work a lot so far. Obviously you go off-key in a few points (not that I'm one to talk), but your songs feel really confident and well-structured. I don't quite have the attention span for seven minute acoustic anthems, but they're pretty. I definitely feel the Oh Comely link in Shameless.
------------------
Jerry: I'm always astounded by people who seem to really know what they're doing. (I mostly mean on an instrument, but it also applies pretty generally.) And I think you know what you're doing. Nice.
----------------
Hep Cat (again): Man, I didn't even notice that. (I didn't actually download anything, I just checked it out.) No account, sorry.

http://www.myspace.com/thejesusfurs
i decided to get rid of the whole surf/beach aesthetic. i was sick of it. i spent this past month listening to a lot of old texas psych and '60s folk, so i'd like to think that these are sort of a merger of the two. a new direction for the band, at least. the three new ones were all, oddly enough, inspired in some way by "kiss from a rose" by seal. this also marks the first time i have ever used acoustic guitar in any of my songs. i was super psyched about people hearing these, but something went wrong with the mixing and now they don't sound so hot (too much reverb, bass, hiss in some places). i may try to fix them, but for now, here they are. and i only just realized that i used the same drum intro for two songs.
and yeah, this month i did focus on the drums more than usual. i was constantly re-recording them. i think i recorded ten different drum parts for "no hassle" before i was happy with it. and my arms almost fell off after playing the drums for "i'm not myself". almost died, yup.
hey wire
first off, "hong kong dollar" is seriously awesome. it sounded like your voice was going into one of those green bullet harmonica mics. i love that sound. this song was completely different than anything else i can remember hearing from you. a+++++++++. completely unexpected, but really really cool nonetheless. the thing that originally made "switchblade" that much better was the whole campfire vibe it had. either way, it's still a great song. there's no arguing there.
sorry i'm a bit late to the rest of these...i froze my face off for three hours with 50,000 other people just to watch the texas rangers lose the world series. i'll probably cry myself 2 sleep, 2nite.
JOHNNY BLISS
it takes a lot to put your songs out for others to hear and critique and like or laugh at and hate or whatever reaction someone has to someone's music. that being said, i respect guys like you...just your voice and a guitar. no band or effects or fuzz or anything to hide behind. it's gotta be kinda like standing naked in front of a huge room of people. i find that a lot of these singer-songrwiter type people suck. you, however, don't suck. actually, i like it quite a bit. and the pitchiness you talk about in "lost in destruction" makes it so much better. it just makes it more real, there's a vulnerability to it, like "i don't give a **** if i hit any of these notes or how my guitar sounds, cause i just gotta get these feelings out there". that's too cool.
HEP KAT
i had no idea what to expect from you this month. your stuff's always out of left field. "johnny meets the river" was weird. i don't know if it was a good weird or a frightening weird just yet, but i'll let ya know tomorrow. "burn the land down" is the coolest. i'm gonna focus on this 9-minute monster that is "lunar tumble". i was expecting just some kind of droney/hazy guitars and maybe some noise burps and whatnot, but what i find is a nine-minute lyrical epic. it actually caught me off guard. alternate title: "the other perfect (condensed) prescription". spacemen 3 vibes in there in some parts. actually there were a ton of vibes i got from that. all the changes kept me interested. good work.
MODERN WEAPONZZZZZZ
the extra Zs might suggest i was bored by your stuff. but we both know that's impossible. finally some new stuff up on the myspace page! it's a winner. the weapons covering the descendents? yeah i'll second wire in saying it's cooler than the original. like a hundred times cooler, at least. actually i looked the descendents version up and it was a lot lamer than i remember it being.
- Anonymous1 decade ago
you're more resourceful than Tom Waits himself
I promise I'll listen to your songs the day after tomorrow( I won't be home tomorrow)
so I'll edit this answer then if the Q is still gonna be open
love the cover, especially the bear that's thinking about cake lol
so I just listened to your songs
man Hong Kong Dollar is awesome , that song just became a favourite of mine from you , still Do Me Do Duds is on 1st place just because it sounds like something you'd find on Tom's Real Gone :D
Switchblade sounded so sweet , I love that too , it's like the kind of song that you listen to when you're down and it makes you feel a tad better
I dunno if that's the song's desired effect or anything, but I feel it like that
Swanson's was alright , I think the other songs are better
overall , really cool stuff especially the first 2 songs

Got three songs recorded this month...
http://justanothersophisticate.bandcamp.com/album/...
...Which may not seem like a lot, but it is when one of them is a 9 minute trip. I'm pretty happy with how my recordings turned out this time. I was trying a lot of new stuff and wasn't sure if any of it was gonna work, but I'm pleased.
I'll edit in some friendly critique in a second.
Source(s): @Wire & String First, I just gotta say that Hong Kong Dollar is my new favorite song from you (and if I got rid of the "from you" part, it'd still be a fairly accurate statement). The drums are great, the bass was rocking, and your vocals are at their best. What did you use to get them to sound so fuzzy(ish)? The new version of Switchblade is sweet. I think I prefer the campfire version though... But maybe this one just has to grow on me. Swanson's is cool too. Doesn't stand out to me as much as the other two, but it's hard to compete against a song like Hong Kong Dollar. Sounds like it was a good month. @likegibberish I think I'm really hearing your stuff for the first time. This past month I listened to a lot of 60's garage and modern revival (Eat Skull, Black Lips, etc.) and I totally hear where you're coming from. This is a really tight thing you've got going. Right now my favorite is No Hassle. The acoustic intro works great and the guitar is bitchin'. Trouble Everywhere is also cool. There's something in it that I can put my finger on (perhaps it's just an effect you have on your guitar), but for some reason I love how it sounds. After the drum intro, y'know how it sounds a little warbly and stuff. I dunno, I just love it. Waste My Time has the coolest intro ever (well, maybe not ever, but since the Big Bang at least). Awesome chord selection. Btw, I tried downloading them (I told you this is great sh*t) and clicking the links on MySpace doesn't seem to work. I had to copy'n'paste them into my url bar. Just an FYI, you might wanna get that fixed. @Johnny Bliss You already know what I think of those songs, so I'm just gonna let my previous comments stand. Good job :) @Jerry I had no idea you were such an awesome pianist (lol pianist.) Childish humor aside though, that was some truly great playing. I'm liking the diversity MPYP is getting; we have garage rock, folk, classical... Anyway, keep it up. Btw, am I going crazy or is it snowing at 0:13 (in the Impromptu in A-flat minor vid)? @Duke Nukem Not really into the style of music you play, but you're a good guitarist. Good work. @Johnny Whoa, that's a creepy coincidence (I promise it's a coincidence). I never thought about that. I'd feel stalked if I were you haha. @Shot Gun I was going to write that, with a name like "Grotesque," the song wasn't what I expected, but then I started listening more closely, and... it sounds pretty grotesque. Like a carnival filled with clowns that got their faces ripped off by lions but insist on doing their job any way. Fun stuff. And yeah, Lunar Tumble will be probably take some time to digest. There's a lot of stuff in there. Tell me what you think when you get through it though. -------------- That was an inordinate amount of typing. I'm going to sleep now. @Shot Gun I checked out the site you linked to that lets you download songs off MySpace, but it seems you need an account, and that they aren't open to everyone. Do you have an account?? Would you let me use it? Sorry, this is probably asking way too much of you, I just get really enthusiastic at the prospect of free music :p - Anonymous1 decade ago
I have an audition for the music school of the university I just got into that I'm practicing for. I'll be playing four pieces for it.

@One Hep Cat: You're going crazy. And thank you.
Actually now I see what you're talking about, that's just dust floating in the air. The sun was shining through the window so it lit all the dust up.

I liked your stuff I have a few songs recorded but I can't post them on you tube because I don't have a vid cam or any desire to get one really. LOL I wish I could attach files here so I could share them with you though.

I've been focusing mainly on school, anyone who wants can check my pieces tho (I might write a new one here soon).
http://www.youngcomposers.com/pg/profile/KingCrims... (click the "Music" tab and my pieces are there, concert versions are best.)
I'm almost done with that soundtrack thing for my friend's film, but again I've been taking a while (it's an older film of his so there's no rush, we're just doing it as a starter deal, but he might enter it into a film contest with my soundtrack, so that'd be cool).
