Can I just give the people with a cute avatar a star?

You can, but there are no points for the stars and they will think someone found their question interesting, not knowing it's for the avatar. Most give stars so they don't have to use the 5 points to ask, they just come back and look at all the answers. Others use it to come back to vote for themselves, or for their contacts to vote for them. The whole meaning of the stars is when we find the question interesting.

yes you can. I do it all the time. also i star every question i answer i just think it is good for me to do this. i never complain when i don't get them as i enjoy giving them. thank you

I normally star all of my contacts when I read their questions when I answer them or not.

I hope that if I can't help you one of my other contacts will see your question and be able to answer them.
