There are numerous places for this:

    iTunes

    Rhapsody

    Napster

    Zune

    AmazonMP3

    etc

If it absolutely must be free, you can always listen to the radio:

    http://www.grooveshark.com/

Well. You didn't hear this from ME, but if illegal methods it is you wish for, go to google and search for "utorrent". Download and install it. Then, find a torrent search engine site to find the music you wish to have, such as btjunkie(dot)org, or thepiratebay(dot)com. Then search for the music you want to receive, and download the torrent file. uTorrent will automatically start downloading it for you.

    HOWEVER.

This method of obtaining music, movies, programs, games, or other things for free is ILLEGAL, and you risk the chance of being caught and fined/jailed. While the risk is low, it is still a risk. Also it is generally looked down upon to support piracy. So, proceed at your own risk.

There are many methods of obtaining music legally, such as those listed by other answers, but almost always it will cost you money. Listening to the radio is a good way to have free music, though it is much more difficult to record the radio for mp3 use or otherwise, and it is not always exactly the music you want. But its free.

  • You could always do it the legal way.

You know, actually BUY the music :)

I'm pretty sure iTunes wont give you viruses and possible jail time.
