What is 4GB DDR3 RAM good for?
Does having that mean I definitely should get 64 bit operating system?
What does "DDR3" stand for?
If I search for it on newegg or something, are all the brands the same basically?

If you don't run a 64Bit OS you will lose a portion of the RAM to overhead. 32Bit Windows can only address 4GB of ram, but you add cache and video memory into the equation and if you are lucky, you will see 3.5GB, I have seen it as low as 3.2GB though. My suggestion is 4GB or more x64, if you run x32, install just 3GB.

For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/X6I6y
consider your operating system and what you normally do with the PC. I believe Vista home premium will only recognise 3gb anyway (may be fixed now but may not). then are your applications memory hungry? Do you regularly see a memory utilizatiuon in excess of the 4Gb? If so then the 8Gb would be better for you as you will see much less swapping to the hard drive. Any DDR is better than a hard drive speed!!! If you don't use that much memory then the DDR3 would be better for sheer speed, but if you use a lot, then 8Gb is better than 4Gb:-)

DDR3 is the type of RAM. DDR3 is currently the most "advanced" RAM for laptops, and I believe for desktops too. DDR3 is significantly faster, and more responsive than its predecessor, DDR2. 4GB RAM is fairly common for new computers these days, so if you want your computer to be "up-to-date", get 4GB now, and upgrade to 6GB or 8GB in about a year.
