Rabbit breeders get in here. Srs?
Hello, I have two rabbits, one is a Holland Lop, and another that I am not sure the breed of. They mated while I was cleaning their hutches, and boom a month later she gave birth. Well I am no breeding expert, but mid pregnancy I gave the doe a lot of straws, she weaved a little nest and shed a lot of fur into it. Now she gave birth to 3 little rabbits. Well they are in a hutch outside, and I am pretty sure that they will survive the night with out a problem with all the fur and straws, but I have a concern. I can never see the babies, they are always under the straws, but they are alive as the straw goes up and down in the places where they lay. What I really am asking, is if the chances of them suffocating is high like that, and if i should add more straws. I am a little scared adding more as I can never see the little ones. Also I don't really want to dig around for them until they are about 10 days old and can eat independently as the mother has a history of abandoning the little ones at the human scent. Sorry for the wall of text, thank you for you time.

-Is it ok if 1 day old rabbits are never seen under all the straws, cant tell if they are being neglected because they only need to be fed once a day, and she never seems close to them when I come around to check.
Thanks, great answer. I was thinking the same exact thing, now is it ok that they are basically never seen? they are always digging at the bottom of the straw bed? I mean all i can ever see when i come to feed is straws moving when they breath.
Thanks guys, really hoping that they pull through, as i really want to see little bunnies alive and well. No homo, srs. Also, did you guys see change in mothers diet? I would just leave them and her alone make sure the males out of her cage and don't touch the baby's they will be fine as long as she dose not kill them. don't touch her or make a lot of noise around her the best thing is to have as little contact with her as possible. I usually Waite 15 days to touch my baby's just to be safe. also make sure the food bin and water bottle is low enough for the baby's to reach this can be done around 10 to 15 days. as far as the baby's suffocating don't worry i have never had that happen. if you must touch them use latex gloves to keep your sent off of them.

Hi,
I agree with the others here. I have several doe, since I am a rabbit breeder, They are just fine under the hay. It is a good idea to check on them, just to make sure all are alive. What I do with the does that we have that are funny about you touching their babies is this. I get a wooden skewer, like your put shrimp on to cook on the grill, and use the flat end to move the hay around so I can see the kits. I touch the skewer to their mouth to make sure they are responsive, and check for full looking bellies. I also will reach in and pet the mom rabbit, then reach in and hold my hand just above the kits, without touching them or the straw, to see if it feels pretty warm in there. If all checks out then cover them back up using the skewer and leave mom alone. Don't worry if you don't see her nursing the kits, she most likely won't do that with you around, it's a protection thing, Check out this site if you need more information.

Ok so here's what you need to know. First of all yes they are fine outside, all that fur and straw is keeping them warm. And just give them a few days to a week, you will see them squirming about in no time at all. You'll never catch the mom anywhere near the babies; it's her defense mechanism. She intentionally ignores them except for their once daily feeding so as not to attract predators to her nest. And unfortunately, you are going to have to check on them to see if they're doing ok. My buns have had two litters and each time there were two that seemed to not be doing so well-saggy skin, flat belly-and we read that supplementing them with goat's milk would help ensure their survival; each litter, one survived and one didn't. Hope this helps!

you have 2 thoughts to get a healthful, happy companion: a shield/rescue or rapidly from a superb breeder. in my view, I decide to undertake from a shield or rescue. The rabbits there will be vet-checked and many times come spayed or neutered, for an adoption fee nicely decrease than what the vet examine & spay or neuter could fee. in spite of if it incredibly is a rescue that makes use of foster properties, they might additionally supply you a good theory of what their temperament in a house subject is like. additionally they get in distinctive somewhat youthful rabbits too, the two in this style of pregnant females that offer beginning there, or litters dropped off while their vendors would be unable to locate them new properties. I in simple terms observed a clean rabbit from the interior of reach shield final month, they had 9 to make a determination from, and in simple terms approximately all have been decrease than a million 3 hundred and sixty 5 days old (and because rabbits stay 8-10 years or extra, all of them have distinctive existence beforehand of them!). in case you opt for a somewhat youthful infant and would't locate what you like at a shield, seem for a breeder at interior of reach rabbit exhibits. Ask questions. you opt for a breeder who has their inventory vet-checked, keeps small numbers so as that they might furnish distinctive man or woman interest, and does not wean until 8 weeks old on the earliest. they might desire to be in touch in the wellness, temperament, and conformation of their rabbits, and could be waiting to show out to you the faults of the mum and dad, and why they planned that categorical pairing to strengthen their lines. The breeders that furnish puppy shops and feed shops do no longer care approximately their animals (in the event that they did, they could choose to show the properties their rabbits went to and furnish them help and suggestion and ensure they had existence-long properties and correct care), so as that they have got a tendency to reproduce substandard specimens (with wellness or temperament problems) when you consider that they're in it for the money and high quality animals fee extra and decrease into their earnings. puppy shops even tend to living house them alongside and not using a quarantine era, and that blended with the stress of going to a clean living house many times leads to a ill bunny some days while they arrive at your place. I even have yet to come upon a puppy-save offered rabbit that did no longer have some style of medical or behavioral subject that progressed.
