How long can an Employer expect you to stay after your shift?

I work in a call centre on the late shift so my shift ends when the call centre shuts (8pm). However if I have a customer on the line I am expected to stay on the call "as long as it takes". I do not receive overtime or time off in lieu for this and we are not allowed to tell the customer that the call has gone past closing time My brother claims this illegal - is he right?

are you salaried or payed by the hour. If you are payed hourly then yes, this is illegal. If you are salaried then it is not because it is part of the position that you work.
