The numbers 2,x,y are three consecutive terms of a geometric sequence and x,30,y are three consecutive?

terms of an arithmetic sequence. find the positive value of x and the corresponding y value.

Update:

Thank you MexhEng2

I may have spent a few hours on this sum!

Addendum:

For

x² + 2x - 120 = 0

I would facotorise directly

(x+12)(x-10) = 0

x = -12 or x = 10, etc.

    From the first sequence:

    y/x = x/2-->(1)

    From the second sequence:

    30 - x = y - 30

    60 - x = y-->(2)

    Plugging (2) into (1):

    (60 - x)/x = x/2

    120 - 2x = x²

    x² + 2x - 120 = 0

    (x + 1)² - 121 = 0

    x = +/- 11 - 1

    x = 10 and x = -12

    Positive value of x is 10.

    Corresponding y -val is 50

    (5x + 2)/(x + 4) = (x + 4)/(x - 2) (5x + 2)(x - 2) = (x + 4)^2 5x^2 - 8x - 4 = x^2 + 8x + sixteen 4x^2 - 16x - 20 = 0 x^2 - 4x - 5 = 0 (x - 5)(x + a million) = 0 x = 5 or x = -a million so which you have (x = 5) 3, 9, 27 which provides a ratio of three:a million for each consecutive term or (x = -a million) -3, 3, -3 which provides a ratio of -a million:a million for each consecutive term.
