How is the old mare looking now?

Switched my 35 year old mare over to triple crown feed about 5 months ago and just wanted to see if you thought she was looking at a good weight now.

just so you know she lost the weight when she was depressed over loosing her pasture mate (she refused to eat)

This was her in June

And this is her in Sept (most recent pic i have)

Update:

She gets all her food soaked with warm water so that it is mashed up.

She is even fatter now this pic was from Sept 1 so it is an older pic, and she has a slightly swayed back so she carries her weight kinda low.

Update 2:

She is getting Rice Bran and bee pulp both are in her feed - she will not eat plain beet pulp

She gets free choice hay and hay pellets in her feed as well

- she does have a buddy she is pastured with 4 other horses and we rescued another old folk like her.

-she is updated on everything blood work is good worm check was good. Vet said tha she is at a great weight now for her age and maintain her where she is now

Definite improvement for a 35 year old. I would suggest adding rice bran to her meal plan. Rice bran doesn't have to be chewed and has a very high fat content. Be careful how much molasses and corn are in the feed your are feeding. Horses digestive systems don't digest sugar well, causing them to have to work a lot harder to absorb the nutrients in the food they are eating. This means they aren't getting all the calories they should be, or that you think they are. You could also feed beet pulp. It is a pellet that you soak, so it is very easy to eat and also has a lot of fat in it.

I would also suggest giving her free choice grass hay... maybe you already do that, it didn't say. If she can't chew grass hay, see if you can get a product in your area called Chaffaye. It is basically silage for horses. They don't really have to chew it. It is already partially broken down so their digestive system doesn't have to work so hard.

Good luck and keep up the good work. Too bad more old horses don't have owners that will try as hard as you do to give them a good retirement!!

Certainly better but still a way to go. I suggest that she has a worm count and a blood count done on her to check why she has lost so much weight. She must have been eating something or she would have died by now. She looks as though she has a problem processing nutrition which is understandable at her age!

  • I think you said that the horse lost her best pasture friend and that she went through a depression. I would like to recommend to replace this lost friend ASAP by putting a goat or a mule there to keep her company. There is nothing worst than a lonely horse .

Otherwise she look better but she is lonely in her head
