10 AnswersHorses10 years agoFor those people that offered advise on here.?
A few months ago my daughters horse choked on his feed and got very sick from it. Well he suffered some permanent damage to his lungs and suffered breathing issues. Well with the heat we have decided to let him go so that he does not have to suffer anymore.
Does anyone out there know where i can get a bracelet made from the snip of tail that we took before he was buried?
5 AnswersHorses10 years agoWestern people need some bit advise?
Well since my QH mare is now 6 years old sadly I have to show her in a shank bit (not my choice believe me) Right now she goes wonderful in an eggbutt snaffle. What type of bit would you recommend. I am fairly new the western riding so any links to pictures would be great.

I have been hearing a lot about this outbreak and was wondering if anyone knew of the states that defiantly had reported a wide spread outbreak?
7 AnswersHorses1 decade agoWhat is the best supplement for arthritis?
I have an older gelding that has pretty bad arthritis. It has started to bother him more now that he is in a hilly and bigger pasture (he has to move around more to keep up with his buddies) so i am looking to start him on something to help with alleviate some of his discomfort. What would you recommend?
12 AnswersHorses1 decade agoWhat bit should i use on my mare?
I have been out of the show world for a long, long time and am just starting to get back into it. I have also decided that I would like to give western showing a shot, since i have a mare that has the training on her. Well she is just turned 5 years old so we have to move from the snaffle that we have always used (and will use for English) into a shank bit. What would be the mildest shank bit that i can put her in. She is very responsive to the snaffle so i want to move her to a very mild shank bit, Any advise?

18 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHelp putting weight back on a picky eater?
Long story short my daughters horse is pretty sick right now but slowly (hopefully) getting better. Now since he has been sick for quite a while now he lost quite a bit of weight We have thankfully got him to start eating and he is holding steady at his weight. I am not worried about getting it back on him right away as he is still sick but I would like to have a game plan for when he is finally over this crap.
Now when i say that this horse is a picky eater i am not exaggerating at all. I have had horses that I have rescued that where easy as pie to put weight on, but then again they would eat anything that you threw at them... not this guy
He will not eat...alfalfa anything (hay, pellets, cubes).....beet pulp....senior feed
I am going to try adding race bran slowly to his feed and we are slowly moving him over to 1/2 oats and 1/2 Neturina Life Design Complete. And when i mean slowly moving him over i literally take 1 handful of oats out and put 1 handful of the other feed in. We got him eating and I'm not turning him off of what he is getting. Right now he is getting his feed coated in Molasses (it was the only way that he would eat at all)
He gets free choice hay, I drop about 1/2 bale in his stall a day and right now he is leaving some behind in the morning when i add more. He is also getting as much feed as he wants to eat. I put in 9 quarts of oats every morning and evening and he is eating almost all of them, vet told me if his bucket is empty when i get there fill it up again till he starts leaving some behind.
He is allowed out of his "room" for short periods only (about 1 hour while i lock up the other horses and let them eat) So he get to graze a bit, although he prefers to go to the water trough and play in it (he only has water buckets in his "room" and he loves to stick almost his whole head in the water and splash)
Any other tips that we can try once he is feeling like himself again would be great.
5 AnswersHorses1 decade agoDMSO (20 characters)?
I have owned horses for a very long time and thankfully I have never really had any horse emergencies (one horse needed stitches on a small cut one time but that was it) until now that its.
Long story short my 3 year old decided that he needed to eat all his dinner in 2 bites, due to the end of the world that was coming and he was not going to die hungry. Well he choked and is now recovering from aspiration pneumonia.
He is slowly getting better (not bad considering that on Monday last week he was only given a 30% chance of making it this far) However he has decided to develop an abscess on his neck and the vet said to use DMSO on it to see if we cam move things along. I have never had to use this stuff before and was looking to get a bit of advise and tips on using this on him from people that have used it before. I am meeting my vet this evening when she gives my boy his IV antibiotic and can ask her any more questions that i have but I figured that I would get tips from other people as well.
PLEASE NO ADVISE on how to keep him from choking again we have already addressed that issue this was the FIRST time this horse had EVER done this.
11 AnswersHorses1 decade agoWhat would you do if your horse was choking?
We had a VERY bad episode of choke this weekend with one of my horses. I was wonder what other people out there do when their horse chokes?
Mind you this horse has only done this 1 time before and we have taken every precaution that the vet has given us to prevent it, but he still thought the world was gonna end 30 seconds after he was fed and he had to get it all in one bite!
No rude comments please my horse is under vet care still *the next episode of choke might very well be me when i see the bill that i am gonna get* I am just bored outta my mind sitting here at the farm and figured that i would entertain myself a bit.
12 AnswersHorses1 decade agoBest feed for horses that are prone to choke?
I have a 3 year old paint that is VERY prone to choking. Last night was the worse case that we have had yet the vet had to tube him. What is the best thing that i can do to keep him from bolting his feed like it is the end of the world.
He already gets all his feed soaked
We have tried to put things in his feed bucket to get him to stop he just dumps out the bucket so that the rocks/salt block are not in the way anymore.
There is NOTHING wrong with his teeth, he does have a VERY slight parrot mouth and the vet checks his teeth on a regular basis
He is fed in a stall so that he has no rush to eat none of the other horses can get into the stall and he can let himself out when he is done.
He does NOT have an issue with eating hay he only chokes on his grain.
13 AnswersHorses1 decade agoIn your opinion what do you think?
Do you think that this guy looks malnourished? my vet was out there yesterday and thinks that he looks good, but one of my hard headed friends thinks that i am neglecting him and i really want to prove her wrong?
9 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHow to deal with discomfort of Carpal Tunnel?
as if things for me are not bad enough yesterday i was diagnosed with carpal tunnel in my right arm. This really SUCKS! I am already dealing with so much damn pain from my knees already I just cant deal with anymore! Now the pain in my hand and wrist (and on a bad day all the way up to my shoulder and neck)is driving me MAD!
Anyone got any suggestions on what i can do to relieve the pain? I am already on some pretty strong pain killers for my knee so dont tell me to take Tramadol (cant take that stuff) .
Thanks for any tips that you have
3 AnswersPain & Pain Management1 decade agoTips on dealing with the pain?
Ok anyone out there got any tips on dealing with the constant pain that i have in my knees. Let me give you a bit of history. I have HORRIBLE knees. I am getting ready to have surgery number 10 on my knees on Monday (number 3 for the left and 7 for the right)
The left knee is much better than the right and will be feeling better as soon as things are cleaned up but it is the right knee that is the troublemaker.
I have constant pain in that knee all the time. I have had a major open knee surgery (not a replacement) and there are times that the front of my leg (where the scar is) hurts so bad that i am not even able to let a blanket touch it. Any tips on dealing with the pain and the depression that not being able to do most of the things that i love anymore would be great!
2 AnswersPain & Pain Management1 decade agoHow to deal with this pain?
Want to know if this happens to anyone else, when my knees hurt really bad my legs will break out in a rash and itch like crazy! My knees will hurt so bad that even covering my legs with a light blanket hurts. What can I do to alleviate the pain and help stop this rash when it gets bad.
1 AnswerPain & Pain Management1 decade agoWho wants to hear a touching story?
This mare and gelding are the best of buddies and are very rarely seen 3 feet from each other. Elmo is hard of hearing and when he is sleeping and does not hear you coming with the feed she nudges him to wake him up. He has a very old injury to his back leg and he prefers to lie down to nap, when he is sleeping Cheyeene is never far from him watching over him. If the other horses are threatening him over the fence she charges up with her teeth bared and they run off (they are in a pasture alone but the horses in the pasture next to them think that they are tough guys from time to time and make mean faces over the fence)
This weekend with the farrier I really saw these two horses know each other and how caring the old mare really is.
The farrier was out to give a trim and Elmo has a hard time holding up his front feet for a long time, my farrier is GREAT with him and does just a little at at a time and she barely makes him hold his hoof off the ground. Don't get me wrong he is not lame he just has a hard time standing on 3 legs. Well she was working on the hoof that he has the hardest time with and Cheyeene (who was standing right there with him the whole time) Slid up under his head so that he was able to lean his weight on her back. Once she did that he was able to stand there with no issues and get his foot finished. My farrier was like look at that she just knew that he needed a little helping hand.
I wish that I had snagged a pic of it but my phone was being retarded and would not take the pic. These 2 are the best of friends and even though I spend 5x more on the feed for these 2 than my other 4 horses combined I will never regret the decision to take Elmo in when no one else wanted him.
Here are the best buds ever!
10 AnswersHorses1 decade agoDo you blanket your horse or no?
I am just bored to death and figured i would see what other people are doing.
I have 6 horses total that live out all year round (we are in NC so a fairly mild climate)
There are only 2 that I blanket on a regular basis
Elmo - he is a 24+ TB cross that i rescued and is still working on putting on weight - we blanket him if it is going to be below 40 degrees
Cheyenne - my 35 year old WOOLLY MAMMOTH (in the winter) -we only blanket her if he is going to get below 30
I am going to get a spare blanket (someone stole the spare that i used to have) for any horse that is not feeling well or anything.
18 AnswersHorses1 decade agoEasy way to put weight on a horse?
What can I add to my horses diet to put a bit of weight back on him.
Long story short the poor guy got abscesses in 3 feet one right after the other , as soon as one was all healed up another one reared its ugly head. We are over that (thankfully) but when was not feeling well he went off his grain and lost a bit of weight.
I DO NOT want to change his grain, he has always done great on straight oats. I have started with the beet pulp twice a day and as always he gets plenty of hay.
9 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHelp getting some weight on a hard keeper?
OK long story short rescued a part TB horse ... fugly as can be but such a sweetheart. We have hit a standoff with his weight. now he still on the thin side but we cant get him really fat as he has bad legs so we have to be VERY careful how fast we put the weight on and just hoe much to get him to.
Yes he is UTD on everything and is seen by a vet, he is older 25+ and may never be a huge rolly polly again but oh well. He is blanketed when it gets cold and he has shelter. There is plenty of water and salt and mineral blocks in the pasture at all times.
Now this guy is a bit of a picky eater so here is what he wont eat so please dont suggest it.
Alfalfa hay - gives him the runs HORRIBLE
Rice bran -as a topping to his feed
Weight building supplements - don't ask why he used to eat them but now he will walk away if you put them in his bucket.
Here is what he does get
Triple Crown Senior
Pelleted Hay
Alflafa pellets (don't ask why but this does not give him the runs)
beet pulp
free choice hay
Any other suggestions that you can give would be appreacited.
And of course here is a pic of my boy (this one is actually a bit old so he is just a bit fatter now)
8 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHow is the old mare looking now?
Switched my 35 year old mare over to triple crown feed about 5 months ago and just wanted to see if you thought she was looking at a good weight now.
just so you know she lost the weight when she was depressed over loosing her pasture mate (she refused to eat)
This was her in June
