Easy way to put weight on a horse?

What can I add to my horses diet to put a bit of weight back on him.

Long story short the poor guy got abscesses in 3 feet one right after the other , as soon as one was all healed up another one reared its ugly head. We are over that (thankfully) but when was not feeling well he went off his grain and lost a bit of weight.

I DO NOT want to change his grain, he has always done great on straight oats. I have started with the beet pulp twice a day and as always he gets plenty of hay.

You can substitute some of the hay with something else (alfalfa is one example). You can also feed more often (3x a day) so that he gets more food without the risks that come with feeding too much in one meal.

Another common fix is corn oil added to his feed. Start with a little bit and work your way up to a higher amount.

If the easy fixes don't help, try supplements that are designed to help your horse gain weight.

Hay will not give any nutritional value, therefore will not make him fat. Go steady with the grass as too much too quickly might give him laminitis - yes even skinny horses can get laminitis. Get a poo sample to the vet to check for worm damage and he might also need a blood test to check why he is not putting on weight. Also get his teeth checked. If he is not chewing properly he is not going to be digesting properly. Sugar beet and bran are good foods to help get weight on though you need some forward planning. SB should be soaked for at least 24 hours to get it to swell outside the horse's stomach. If it swells inside having come into contact with the stomach acids it will invariably cause colic, which is not something you want now or at any time. Barley can also be fed. That is pretty fattening. Once he has put on the weight you will want to level it out. Just because your other horses look well etc does not mean that grass is sufficient for this fellow. Every horse is different and they all need a properly balanced diet. Again, speak to the vet and ask what to be done. Remember to pick up ALL droppings after worming to prevent recontamination and ALL the horses have to be wormed on the same day!

Beet pulp, and possibly a haylage net once or twice a day. Haylage has far more nutrition in it than plain hay - but some horses become acidic on it so might need pink powders which will neutralise the acid. And possibly supplements.

Putting some linseed (flaxseed in US) in the feeds would also do him the world of good, but it needs to be soaked and then boiled. I do not know if you have the facility for that. Vegetable oil will work just as well.

I hope this is the end of your poor horse's troubles and that he will soon regain condition. I do know that some horses do not do well with pain or box rest!

Oats doesnt keep a horses weight. the horses that ive had were given 14% protein with oats. it kept their weight perfectly. only it hasnt wored with one of my horses but i found what the reason was today. adding some corn oil will help gain a horse's weight, and will also make its coat shiny and smooth. exercising my horses helped putting weight and muscle on em. dont work em to hard. just lung em a couple times a day. make sure you feed her at least twice a day. make sure to worm her.

    hopes this helps! :D <3

Give him beet pulp three times a day a day, and give him alfalfa, with a bit if costal. Give him w round bale, it may help. Also give him alfalfa cubes. I know you don't want to change his feed but you may want to try giving him lunch feed. It will help, up his feed, try a higher fat content. But use the same brand, he won't know the difference.

Vegetable oil helps. Along with rice bran.

I also used the farmar "Weight builder" powder...it really works :]

Try breaking his feeding into 3 times a day.

he may have ulcers, try puting him on U-Gard PELLETS (most horses like them better than the powder) my horse was off and on her feed for a few months when we first got her and my barn owner and the vet recomened putting her on the U-Gard and that really helped her eat more and put the weight that she had lost back on. also try Fat-Cat Weight Gain supplement, that worked for us too, hope this helps ♥

Add flax seed or rice bran. They have more health benefits than just adding weight.

If you go the oil route, I go with Canola Oil.

Try mixing honey and melted butter in with the oats. My mother in law uses bacon fat but a lot of people take issue with feeding the fat of a fellow barnyard friend to a horse.

    Happy Trails!
