What is a 'lifetime contract'? (details inside!)?

So the off season is upon us, and on MLB Network's Hotstove yesterday (Friday November 5th) The analysts talked about what Derek Jeter's contract should be from the Yankees. One of them (Harold Reynolds, I believe) said that Derek Jeter should get a lifetime contract from the Yankees. So I was wondering, what is this?

and now for a BQ....

Do you think Jeter should get a lifetime contract?

Thanks for your answer, have a nice day! :)

Whatever is called a lifetime contract is not...it's impossible.

But we already know that Jeter will work with the Yankees as long as he wants...it's Jeter who calls the shots on that...because they promised him. Now it doesn't make any difference what contract is signed...it's a mutual understanding.

he will have to stay with the Yankees. he likes the Yankees so what does it matter? The amount of money Jeter gets is really astounding.

  • Means pretty much that he's the property of the team for life.

It means they own him for the rest of his life, he will eat, sleep, dream and crap pinstripes until the day he dies.
