Computer problems with windows 7?

I think my hard drive is failing. I know I have about 1/3 of it as free space but windows is telling me that the C drive is full and won't allow me to access it. I recently bought an external drive and hooked it up but again windows will not allow me to access it. I downloaded the drivers for it but I keep getting that caution sign and when I try to troubleshoot it windows says it encountered a problem. Any ideas?

    open a MS-Dos window

    type CHKDSK /F C:

it will prompt you to do this on reboot, tell it YES

close the window, reboot your system and let it run the CHKDSK

IF there are errors in the index tables, this will find and correct them

If this not the issue, then the question comes of what A/V software are you running and is it doing the job.
