L.A.'s "Must see" on the rock scene?

I would like to plan a trip to the LA area to check out the music scene and visit some places like the Rainbow, Whiskey, etc.--places where some of my favorite bands got their start. Any must see spots along these lines that I shouldn't miss while in the area?

Also, I'd like to visit the Haight/Ashbury area in SF-- any Manson-esque things I should make sure to hit while there as well? Thanks!
