The old standby, Green Bean Casserole. I'd be thrown out of the family if I did not bring it.

    That'll be 5-cents, please.

I've been making this for years and never have any leftovers. Cranberry Mousse 1 (6 oz) pkg cranberry flavored jello 1 c boiling water 1 (20 oz) can crushed pineapple 1 (16 oz) can whole berry cranberry sauce 3 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp grated lemon peel 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 2 c sour cream 1/2 c chopped pecans or walnuts (optional) In a large bowl, dissolve jello in boiling water. Drain pineapple, setting the pineapple aside and adding juice to jello. Stir in cranberry sauce, lemon juice, lemon peel and nutmeg. Chill until mixture thickens. Fold in sour cream, pineapple and pecans. Chill until set.

I love green bean casserole!! My mom lovingly refers to it as the "damn green bean casserole" because we have it every year and she doesn't like it. But I love the stuff and it's easy to make- it's like the ultimate comfort food....MMMM

Here is a basic recipe for it:

And here is Paula Deen's way (fresher ingredients):

Also, mashed potatoes are a must at Thanksgiving. This is a recipe I've made several times now over the past month (been practicing for the holidays) and they turn out perfect every time, although I do cut back on the butter just a little:

    Good luck, and happy cooking!!

I LOVE making sweet potato casserole. It's basically mashed/cooked sweet potato, brown sugar, a couple eggs, pie spices (like your nutmeg and cinnamon), and evaporated milk. Basically the same recipe you would use for sweet potato pie, lol. But on top, you make a crumb topping with melted butter, chopped pecans, brown sugar and flour...then crumble on top. Bake at 350 till done...just like pie, but BETTER! Oh, and some people put mini marshmallows on top, but I'm not a fan. Nothing compares to the crunchy topping!

I always bring the appetizer... do crescent rolls w/ a cream cheese sausage filling. All I do it cook hot sausage in a skillet (1 lb.), drain fat... then mix into two blocks of cream cheese (softened) and add two tablespoons of sour cream. Then I refrigerate the mix... after that I take a large spoonful and set it on top of a unfolded crescent roll and mold the roll around the dollop of mix. Bake and then you have a scrumptious appetizer!

    Wine.

No seriously - I do all the cooking for the most part and it's homemade macaroni and cheese, rolls, yams, if my MIL is up to it that green bean mushroom soup thing I'm not too crazy about. Steamed green beans with bacon bits, Walnut and oyster stuffing, regular stuffing for the wimps.

The "Savoy cabbage with smokey bacon " here is my favorite both at Thanksgiving and at Christmas.
