Question about dog food brands...?
I've been researching some brands of dog food because I'm interested in switching my dog to something different. He is currently being fed Trilogy (Life's Abundance) dry formula. It is not a terrible food, but he's not crazy about the taste of it and I'd like something that contains less meat by products and more real meat.
After searching a few brands I'm down to 4 I'm considering, but would like outsider opinions from people who may have more experience or knowledge about dog nutrition. My first choice is Fromm. Ive also looked at and like Canidae, Wellness and Solid Gold. If anyone has any opinions or facts concerning these foods I'd appreciate it!
Thanks for the opinions so far guys.
Still Can't Think Of A Name... Nice name lol. I was also going to consider either Evo or Innova but have heard of the recent change in ownership so have decided not to go that route.
The price of Life's Abundance in comparison to other foods of similar quality is another reason I am thinking of switching.

Life's Abundance looks decent enough (no sign of meat by-products), but you could get the same thing with Kirkland, 4Health, Diamond Naturals, Premium Edge, and Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, etc., for a much better price. I mean, who would buy Life's Abundance when it's in the same price range as Orijen/EVO?
Fromm Surf & Turf is a great food (grain-free duck & salmon!), and so is Wellness CORE (grain-free as well, with two varieties). I love that Fromm is independently owned and manufactured (better manufacturing control). I want to try Canidae (very reasonably priced and I would only have to feed around 2 cups, which is significantly less than my usual), although I'm a little worried about their suppliers use of Ethoxyquin in their fish meals. They can guarantee that they don't use it, but they can't guarantee it for their suppliers. I actually want to send them an email to see if they can guarantee a certain ppm (parts per million) or under; I wouldn't care about something like 5 ppm (an amount allowed in human food), which is almost nothing. I've never tried anything from Solid Gold, but the crude protein is a little low in (22%, and 18% for Holistique Blendz), although the prices are okay. Their Barking at the Moon dry food is a great deal, though; the same protein range as Orijen and EVO, but a lot less.
I would also recommend Orijen (the best dry food on the market), Acana (both made by Champion and awesome), EVO (highest protein on the market; I know P&G recently bought Natura, but I'm not yet worried because the Pres. & COO has kept his position and the management teams are intact), and Taste of the Wild Wetlands & High Prairie Formulas (their two formulas with 32% crude protein; a great deal at $1.57 per lb). All four are grain-free (Acana has some grain-inclusive formulas, though).
EDIT: Thanks xD. I'm not really worried about the change in ownership right now, maybe in a year or so if there's been a change in management (has not happened). Why don't you check out Champion (Acana & Orijen)? I really think Orijen is the best dry food on the market. It's grain-free, has a crude protein of 40%, has fresh regional ingredients from Canada (you'll see some protein sources you haven't seen before) deemed fit for human consumption, wild-caught fish, and is independently owned/manufactured. It costs a little more than EVO in most areas. Acana's pretty much the same, with less protein, and costs less. Three of their formulas are grain-free, with 33 or 34% (I forgot) crude protein.

The brands you listed are all great foods, I would recommend any of them. However, I find that dogs like Canidae and Wellness CORE's taste the best. All are healthy for your dog.

All 4 of those are wonderful foods. I say start with the cheapest one, if he does well on that, keep with it. If not, go on up to the next least-expensive one, etc.
Source(s): Tons of dog food experience over the past couple years. Out of your list, I have fed Canidae & Wellness. My dog did good on both. I have heard great things about both Solid Gold & Fromm, and the ingredients are great. - How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.
