Potassium manganate to potassium permanganate? Need answer ASAP?
Is it possible to create potassium permanganate from potassium manganate without the need of electrolysis?
First reasonable answers gets best answer.
Oh yeh one more thing, any idea if you can find any naturally occurring manganese dioxide, or is there a way you can make it. Again no electrolysis.
Thx

At lower pH [ie acid solution], the manganate ion will disproportionate to permanganate ion and manganese dioxide:
3 K2MnO4 + 2 H2O → 2 KMnO4 + MnO2 + 4 KOH
Can you find MnO2 naturally? ...Yes, it is called pyrolusite. Depends where you live whether you'll find any.
Can you make it? .. yes, just heat the mineral rhodochrosite. That is a pink rock that isn't difficult to obtain.
Over 80% of the known world manganese resources are found in South Africa and Ukraine. Other important manganese deposits are in China, Australia, Brazil, Gabon, India, and Mexico. The United States imports manganese ore because the manganese resources in the U.S. are relatively low in manganese content per ton of ore. Importing these ores is presently more economic than mining them locally.
