Why do people not believe in aliens?

Let us think about this. The universe is massive and infinite. We have only seen the surface of a few planets, and if I'm right we have never sent a probe out of the Sol system. Isn't it naive to think we are the only ones in the universe? I hear people say its because Earth is the only inhabitable planet that we know of. But isn't it possible that beings from another planet do not require the same atmosphere that we do? I find it quite strange some people do not believe in Extra-Terrestrials. Opinions?

Update:

Mister Phobe, but isn't it possible that they might have more advanced technology? They might have reached their industrial period before us?

Update 2:

Dr. Nice Guy, I'm not necessarily talking about abduction theories and the like, I'm just talking about the people who just don't believe that any life exists on other planets. Oh and if I remember correctly, wasn't there bacteria or something similar found on Mars?

Update 3:

Forgive if I am misusing the term alien, let me clarify that I am talking about intelligent life/civilizations on other planets.

They're simply ignorant. The Universe is too big to rule out the possibility of of another us! I believe if something happens once it can happen again, no matter how long it takes or how slim the chance is.

Also who's to say life didn't exist maybe 1 billion years back? Maybe they discovered everything that there was to know... Well if they did know everything they wouldn't have died, but that's not the point.

We can only imagine those advances civilizations... the Macindows 87 computer... 8D movie theaters... 3 dollar prostitutes... No global warming... No blood sucking profesions... Oh the Glory!!!!

Its very possible that life, even other civilizations exist out there.

But the term "aliens" means that they are here, and there is no reason to believe that they are here. The mars rock by the way had been on earth for millions of years, so the bacteria found on the mars rock is not nessessarily from mars.

You are very right but somepeople think it's not possible because we haven't discovered them. People only believe what they can understand and know. We have never proven it bun have never proven it false. I'm with you bud. Go to YouTube and type in Time Traveler and look one theory is that it was an alien in the vidoe the other is a time traveler. You should look at that.

I think you're confused, people not buying into worldwide alien conspiracies, abductions and cattle mutilations among other things, does not mean they don't believe there's other life in the Universe.

Edit. Very few people I know of, are of the view intelligent life is absolutly exclusive to Earth. Religious fundamentalists that take the Bible literally, would be one example.

I believe in them. The Universe is teeming with life. I just don't believe they will ever arrive here as time and distance makes it impossible.

Because they are open-minded and they may actually be scared of them. I BELIEVE!
