    You have several possibilities to say this sentence:

    María llamó a José ayer.

    María llamó por teléfono a José ayer.

    Ayer María le dió una llamada a José.

    Ayer María llamó a José por teléfono.

    Ayer María llamó a José.

    The last one is the most usual.

    There is an accent over the "o" in llamo.
