Does the focusing ring affect the focus of a camera if you are not in manual focusing mode?

Update:

There is a dial on the camera body that lets me switch between manual focusing, auto focusing and continuous auto focusing.

Update 2:

There is nothing on the lens except for a zoom ring and focus ring.

If the lens has an MF/AF function, ie it autofocuses but can also manually focus without having to switch to manual focus on the camera body, then it will rotate & focus the lens.

If there is no such feature, then the focus ring is usually locked unless you switch to M.

Edit: Ah right - that means when the dial on the camera body is in continuous auto or auto focus mode, the focus ring on the lens will be locked - the servo in the camera body will focus the lens. Only when the camera body is switched to manual focus will that disengage the servo motor & unlock the focus ring on the lens so you can turn it.
