Many great people have claimed that life is an illusion, from Zen teachers to scientists, but i don't understand why?

Should not be too difficult to accept their claim.

What ever we know, our memory hard disk inside us, all the data, all of it came through only the sense organs. And then the processor did all the permutation, combination, and we have those 'concepts'.

All these sense organs are with very limited capability of perception. Even an owl does not agree with us when we say it is a 'dark' night! Our eminent scientist Shri Yashpal Kapoor spent a few days with some tribals, during a research, and they showed him how to observe the ant movement in that forest area and predict very accurately that it would rain within next 48 hours. Ants seem to have sharper 'sensory' perception! (I even remember the single projector film shows where, often there is a mismatch between the shutter speed and the 'illusion' on the silver screen is 'exposed' to reality that what we see is only slides of 'still' photo-images on the screen, but the illusion of that 'moooovie' is just because it matches the shutter speed of our eyes. When we are caught up in emotional outburst, we fail to notice the pain of a mosquito bite and may "claim" that we never had a mosquito bite at that time!

(Human being is capable of going beyond the sensory level of perception! (spirituality-business).That is when the clarity of this 'illusion' occurs "experiential"!! Till then, we can merely keep busy with debates about it)

That which appears as life is just that appearing, temporary and constantly changing. That which never changes is real. Why would the real have to change? It would not it is already real. Illusion is that which the mind appears to tell us it is life however, it is always changing and therefore cannot be real. The only reality and constant in the changing dual world is change, There is nothing right or wrong about anything less the mind makes it so. What appears in the dual world is illusion what else could it be, look around find one thing in the dual world that is not temporary. There is nothing right or wrong what one believes, if it works for U then U have found what works for U. This understanding is very deep and it takes time to understand. But once I truly realized that life is the doer, and controller and not me the pain and the madness stopped. So call it whatever U want to call it, God, Buddha, the almighty, is the same life force (energy.) I have no dog in the race and I support your beliefs', as long as they do not appear to harm or hurt anyone. If time as some scientist auld started with the Big Bang and time is needed for anything to happen then how could this Big Bang have happened when time did not exist before the Big Bang. A happening must have time in order to happen a begging and an end. Also an other thing that is needed for a happening is consciousness. There must be time and consciousness first before an happening can appear in the dual world. I believe that there R two worlds one known as dual and illusion and another known as oneness and real. Once the mind can keep them separate then suffering as we know it will stop. And that is the reason I have taken some time and lettered this piece, to help people stop the suffering. If U would like to know more do a search for Adviita.

Journey of the Soul. I like to think of it sometimes as the ultimate halodeck. Really to try and explain my perspectives is hard. First their "mine" and not "yours" and if you want to make them "yours" that would be fine but I don't know what good that will do you. Secondly I am not sure how to say it. It's kinda uneccesarily long winded and elusive like a big slippery fish. Whenever you think you have it nailed it slips away and you realize you didn't. Then you get a hold of it that seems to explain things in a deeper and higher way and then it slips again. I suppose it has been going on like that forever. It's all good fun though isn't it? I have heard it called the Earth school. You could look at it as a means to facilitate evolution. Maybe God get's tired of floating around in space and needed to fill his time in an intelligent way. Then again there is no time. Maybe he did it all to amuse himself but then I would just be projecting human image onto God when it seems to be the other way around. Because He Loves us? Perhaps He wanted to experience himself in a different way. Perhaps God is evolving but then again there isn't time to evolve in for Him. Maybe life is an illusion and we are all like chess pieces. Then again if we can know it is an illusion, well that is a game changer isn't it? How could that be possible? If it is and we can be in on God's little secret that really makes the questions interesting doesn't it. Hmmm. It is all very creative isn't it? Any answer will do until you find another one that suits better. Have fun. It is a good question indeed. Namaste

It can't possibly be real. At least not in the way we think. Consider this. Nothing touches. Fields separate everything. This being true would require that things don't even touch themselves. In other words, your fingers are not only not attached to your hand, they are not even attached to themselves! Neutrinos pass through us all the time. This is not because they are magic, it is because we are porous. As you break each component down farther and farther we see nothing touches and all things are held in a state of seeming solidity which is a complete illusion! Things might be real but ultimately everything is the same stuff expressed differently. At the quantum level even these differences disappear. You are in a simulation brother. At least my conclusions are pointing towards that.

If we are to switch perspective with a telescope, microscope, high speed or time lapse cameras, then we begin to understand the nature of existence in different levels of awareness. The totality of that understanding is very limited with respect to the multitudes of scales available in the whole universe. The objective world we hold so dearly onto is the product of our subjective experiences, it is merely so in appearance thus an illusion.

    Life is not an illusion,

that's what people say when they are not yet ready to face life.

    You should always reflect.

You must stick to something or at least have something to protect or achieve and is worth spending your life for, that way, you will see life as a reality, even if it revolves on one subject and one purpose.

When you allow your perceptions to be clouded by the categorizations of your intellect, life becomes an illusion. If you walk down a street and sense hostility or contempt from others, where is that coming from? From them? From your own mind? Would you be aware of the concept of wet if someone had not told you what it was to be wet? You would, but you would not know that it was called anything, and you wouldn't be able to label it as a separate experience except by making up new categories to describe it.

Perceiving life as it is, with "Suchness" makes this illusion fade and life itself stand out as one undifferentiated experience.

This feeling is pretty awesome when you experience it here or there.

Two monks were arguing about the temple flag waving in the wind. One said, "The flag moves." The other said, "The wind moves." They argued back and forth but could not agree.

The Sixth Ancestor said, "Gentlemen! It is not the wind that moves; it is not the flag that moves; it is your mind that moves." The two monks were struck with awe.

The definitions of wind and flag only exist in our minds, this is the illusion of life referred to in Zen.

The illusion is the concepts we believe are real.

I think illusion really means perception. For example, I could be having a conversation with my mother, whom I perceive to be extremely negative and critical. I could be talking about the weather. Her perception of the weather is completely different than mine. So I could say it's a beautiful sunny day and she could say But the weatherman said it's going to get cloudy and colder later.

To me, life is what you make it so you may as well make the best of it.

Life is what you make of it. Literally, Given the proper motivation and drive you can make your life anything you choose to make it. Thus it is an illusion, a creation of the ego, to make a prideful will content.
