What is the difference between Microsoft office and Open Office?

I was trying to find a free power point download and couldn't because you have to buy it first. So my friend recommended Open Office. I'm really only interested in it's power point capabilities.

Is it a good program?

If I have to turn in a powerpoint to a teacher, will open office be compatible with their software?

OpenOffice is basically a free, open-source version of Microsoft Office. In my opinion, it does a very good job in replacing Microsoft Office.

It may be slightly different, but it is fully compatible with Microsoft Office. It can open Microsoft Office documents, and when saving, all you have to do is choose "Save As..." and set the file type to a Microsoft Office document.

Open Office supports Microsoft Office files but by default does not save files in Microsoft Office format. When you go to save my sure you do a "save as" and select a Microsoft Office format. Other than that you can use Open Office for free to do all your school work.

Another option is make yourself a free Hotmail email account. With Hotmail now you can use Microsoft Office online. I know there is Word and Excel, Power Point might or might not be in Hotmail though. Take a look in to that as well, Microsoft also give you free 25Gb of storage with Hotmail mail as a SkyDrive. Easy to keep online files to print or send anywhere.

One is made by Microsoft and cost money. The other (Open Office) is free and open source and made by Oracle and is fully compatible with MS Office and BTW Open Office is a very good free alternative to MS Office.

Microsoft Office costs $200. Open office is free. Try it, if you don't like it simply uninstall it. I believe Open Office uses the same file formats as Microsoft Office.
