What's the difference between going out on a date and just hanging out with them?

Like lunch or dinner. Two people can eat lunch or dinner without it being a date. What's the difference between eating dinner together and going on a date out to dinner. or some other example. What's your opinion?

The difference is friends going, and people who are interested in each other going out.

I think if you say do you want to go on a date with me, it's a date, and if you say do you want to hangout, then it's just hanging out as friends. Ha ha ha

No touching. On a "date" date, you at least try to hold hands or sit very closely. Keep a distance.
