How were wood barrels opened?
Back before cardboard boxes and steel drums, wooden barrels were one of the main methods of transporting both wet and dry goods. When the barrel got to where it was going, how did people open it in order to get what was inside? How did they take the top off? (I know about tapping a barrel for liquid contents - that's not what I'm interested in.)
Were there any special tools used? How were they applied?
A link to a site that either explains or shows on video is fine.

As I recall you pried the top off. It was nailed down but could be removed.
