why do earthworms come up to the surface of the earth when water percolates into the ground?

Oh, and also find out how they respire.

plz i need a correct answer, correct! within tomorrow or else I'll be doomed for this lab assignment!

    Their skin is the respiratory organ. It contains many small blood vessels that carry blood to through it. Just like our lungs need a change of air to remove the CO2 abd bring in O2 the earthworm needs to have a moist environment saturated with oxygen. When it rains and the tunnels fill with water, the water becomes stagnant ant its O2 content decreases. The earthworm has to surface to breathe since the surface is moist not stagnant.

    Um. They come up because they gotta breathe. If they stay down in earth while wAter is filling up, they will drown.

    How they respire? Truthfully, i have no idea. Maybe google it?
