you answered your own question. axial skeleton is the main part of the skeleton that you need to survive. you can survive without the appendicular parts. appendicular also means appendage, which are arms and legs, and the axis is located in the base of the skull where it meets the first vertebrae, which are very important to sustaining life. hope that helped.

The axial skeleton (as its name suggests) provides the axis of the body to which everything else is attached. So the axial skeleton is the cranium and vertebral column. The appendicular skeleton consists of the "attachments", these are the shoulder and pelvic girdles and the arms and legs! Good luck
