How does my toy watch know what date it is?

Really weird question i know, but i have a toy watch and as well as the time it also has one window to tell me what the date is (1st, 15th, 30th etc). I changed the date yesterday and when i looked at it today it was half off the 14th and half on the 15th. I changed it to the 15th and heard it click in to place, but now im wondering how it will know that it's 12 in the afternoon not 00:00 and also how it knows that this month is a 30 day month not a 31 day month, or will i need to change it every time there is a 30 day month?

it's programmed so that it only changes the date once for every two cycles round the clock face so it changes the date at the right time, it's lucky that it changes it at midnight as sometimes you have to alter it cos it thinks midnight is nonn 


you will need to change the date to the first after a month less than 31 days too
