Cockatiel has red puffy eye - what can be done?

I know the first thing everyone is going to say: take it to a vet.

but this bird isnt mine and im not in a position to take it anywhere. the owner is someone i work with and he's not doing anything about it, choosing to wait it out.

the bird has no other symptoms. he's about 8 years old, he eats and drinks and his behavior isnt any different than usual.

his left eye is red around the edges, puffy, and about halfway closed. is there anything i can do for him?

Check that it has not got something in the eye,feather-seed husk-etc.spraying with warm water will help, but you will need eye ointment if it is an infection.

If the bird doesn't like to bathe himself, spritz him with warm water daily. It may help to remove any irritation, and keep his feathers in good condition. Make sure his cage paper is changed daily, and that he has fresh food and water. Thoroughly clean and sanitize his cage weekly.
