In late pregnancy, cervix exams?
In the last month of pregnancy, why do they need to check for dilation every week? Apparently they have to check my cervix. I really don't care if the baby could come in 2 weeks or 5. It will happen when it happens. I don't want to be prodded until then. What exactly do they do, and what is the purpose?

There is no purpose. Really checking your dilation tells the doctor (and you ) nothing about when you will go into labour. Plus, it increases your risk of premature rupture of membranes and the introduction of infection.
You can tell your doctor that s/he can keep his hands outta you. Otherwise you can tell everyone you got fingered at the doctor.
Some woman like knowing that they are progressing and agree to a membrane sweep but you always have the right to refuse this.

Refuse them-a lot of women do. Thankfully, the practice I go to doesn't have them unless there is a special reason. The end of pregnancy is uncomfortable enough without extra prodding!

There is no purpose and you can absolutely refuse until your in active labor
