How do you earn respect from students in an inner city school?
I am a first year math teacher who has never been exposed to city schools. I am from the suburbs of Chicago and wasn't planning to teach in an inner city school; hence, I never mentally prepared for what I am experiencing. On top of that, I am a petite, young-looking female. You know, the stereotyped appearance that has the most difficulty with classroom management statistically.
The kids love me, and they "say" they respect me (I asked them directly). But I have not seen this from them. They rarely show me this respect on a consistent basis.

You've got to be organised with clear objectives which they can understand for each lesson, and strategies for isolating troublemakers.
And DON'T ask them things like that. They will see it as weakness.

You should have ground rules and let them know that you are in charge. That they can have fun at the appropriate times but they have to do their work.My daughter has a lot of young teachers at high school and they are pretty strict but nice. You have a job to do which is to teach all the students/
