How much would it cost to convert a 1982 chevy silverado from a 4x4 to a 4x2?
Im wanting to buy a truck that has been all gone through from my godfather but my mom wont let me get a 4x4 truck cause of gas and insurance, so I wanna know what its going to cost me to convert it to a two wheel drive. Thanks.

instead of looking at how to convert the truck from 4x4 to 2 wheel drive, suggest that you research the Chevy 4x4 trucks. the 4 wheel drive is a safer truck, especially in the winter driving conditions. if the truck has manual hubs on the front axle, then the gas mileage is only a little less than 2wd.
also contact the insurance company and discuss insurance rates, on a truck as old as this one there may not be much or any difference in the rate.
my main suggestion is to do your homework and find all the positive reasons for owning a 4x4 truck.

Buy a different truck. Even if you remove the front drive shaft and transfer case, you will still have the front differential causing drag and the VIN will show it as a 4x4 no matter what so insurance will have to be on a 4x4. Seriously, the difference in gas mileage is not noticeable to do such a thing to an old truck. The problem is the V8 and carburetor, along with a young driver that cant help but have some fun. Trust me on that.....I had over 30 tickets by the time I was 18!

It would cost far more than the truck is worth, and far more than you'd EVER save in the difference in insurance rates, even ignoring the fact that the VIN determines 4WD for insurance and titling purposes.
Gas isn't going to make enough difference to worry about. Sure, 10MPG to 11MPG is a 10% difference, but it's meaningless when filling the tank.
If it's a good truck, been taken care of, and you are getting it for a song, get it. The price difference to buy another vehicle will easily exceed the amount of gas or insurance you might save.

That's crazy and would be a nightmare. It'll cost alot more than some gas and insurance. I don't even think the frames are the same, you would have to cut control arm brackets off of one from a junkyard and weld them on. Alot fabrication. Not worth it.

check with insurance company to see what the price difference is..... also it would not matter if you removed the 4x4 because the truck VIN shows the truck as a 4x4 and that is what the insurance company uses to Identify everything about the vehicle......Sorry!!!!

simple. take the transfer case shifter and put it in 2wd hi. or for a permanent fix drop the front driveshaft. for gas milage may want to also remove the tcase but it shouldnt be that bad
